Thoughts on the Bible Readings for January 2nd (Genesis 3, 4; Psalms 3, 4, 5; Matthew 3, 4)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]In Genesis 3 we have the record of how sin first entered the world through the yielding to temptation by the first created humans - Adam and Eve. The Apostle Paul says also, that at this time death also first came to the Adamic creation as a result of sin - Romans 5verses12. Adam and Eve after their creation - Adam from the dust (Genesis 2verses7), and Eve from Adam's side during a God-induced sleep (2verses20-25) - the man unable to find a suitable partner from the lesser creation; and feeling first, lonely; then joyous with a compatible companion. Chapter 3 commences with an introduction to the snake, who at that era had great powers of observation; limited reasoning capacity; and the ability to talk. The snake suggested that Adam and Eve were being deceived and held back by the Elohim (God). And so, after seeing the fruit of the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" was attractive (pleasant to the eyes); it was good, and an excellent quality (good for food); and its clinching appeal - "a tree to be desired to make one wise" (the pride of life. Paul tells us in Philippians 2 that Adam and Eve grasped for equality with God - which thing our Lord Jesus Christ never did when tempted. The Apostle John tells us in his first letter chapter 2verses15-17 that all temptation and sin fall in one or more of these categories. Having sinned they were expelled from the garden; James tells us in chapter 1 the process of sin within every human mind - verses 13-15. Having disobeyed God, He the Almighty must in justice enforce the law He had given. Adam and Eve now had the sentence of death activated within them - this is called "mortality". What was possible before transgressing was now "a law within them" (Romans 7verses21-25) - i.e. now an inevitability. The human race now found that from this point forward all descendants from the first human parents found that sin cannot be overcome in their lives every time that each of us is subjected to temptation - Romans 6 tells us that they were bond slaves to sin. It required God to produce a Saviour, His Son, who although bearing the bias to sin within himself; this being the entail of the effects of Adam and Eve's first sin, would himself be sinless - though Jesus was of our identical nature (Hebrews 2verses12-18. Romans 8verses1-4). This required the production of God's own Son being born of a virgin (Luke 1verses30-35) and is the meaning of Genesis 3verses15. This promise of the coming Redeemer is the first of the Bible's great and precious promises. The "tree of life" was preserved, but the promise of life was now conditional on being one of the true and baptised believers in the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 6; Revelation 2verses7). Adam and Eve attempted to cover their nakedness - itself a biblical symbol of sin - with fig leaves. But the Sovereign's principle was that sin cannot be covered without an offering (blood shedding; Hebrews 9verses22). We know that God slew a lamb in whose skin their nakedness (sinfulness) was covered (John 1verses29; Revelation 5verses6- 14; 7verses9-14; 14verses1-5). Chapter 4 of Genesis tells us of the Bible's first murder of Abel by his brother Cain. Cain was envious of the Almighty's acceptance of Abel's blood offering as his God's commandment required. The lesson is firstly we cannot change what God has required. Cain was expelled because he was not only a murderer of the innocent; he also failed to repent when told to (see Hebrews 11verses4; and 1 John 2; where we are told that hatred for our brother is the seed of murder; John 8 tells the same lesson). The 4th chapter of Genesis tells us the wicked ways of Cain's descendants - one of the worst of whom was Lamech; the 7th generation from Adam and contemporary of Enoch, whom he threatened to murder with impunity, so Hebrews 11verses5 tells us. More comments will be made in tomorrow's readings for chapter 5 of Genesis. Psalm 3 describes David's complete trust in God's providence when fleeing from his murderous usurping son, Absalom. We need not to be overcome by what would appear to be overwhelming distress, but rather be confident in the love, care and readiness of our Sovereign to deliver His children - and may we rest confidently in that peace of mind. Psalm 4 is from the same time when David's nephews - Joab and Abishai - sought to slay the blasphemous and treasonous Benjamite, Shimei. David left all vengeance to the Almighty; but found his nephews unbearable. Let us learn that nothing is gained by taking vengeance for ourselves, rather is everything lost in so doing. Psalm 5 is a prayer of David for his Sovereign to hear and answer his prayer by delivering him from evil when facing calamity. He exalts in the understanding that his Omnipotent deliverer is all powerful and always responsive to the cries of His children. Pause and ponder the power available to them that put their trust in the Almighty. The prophet Ezra put together the order of the Old Testament books in the cannon of the Bible. Psalm 1 is in the Hebrew Scriptures attributed to Enoch. It describes the blessings coming to those whose mind meditates first and foremost on the Word of God. Failure to maintain this focus leads to a decline the psalmist describes; and which was evident in the life of Lot from Genesis 13-19. The lesson starts with the concept that bad company corrupts good morals. Enoch spoke of the certain and imminent judgment of the ungodly times in which he lived as a sure and certain token that the Sovereign of His people will obliterate the ungodly cp Jude verses 14-16 (we will make further comments when speaking about Genesis 4 and 5). Jeremiah himself when meditating on Psalm 1 contrasts the tree drinking deeply from the rivers of waters with the heath of the desert - Jeremiah 17verses5-10 (the man who trusts in himself is self- deceived and contrasts the person whose heart is stayed on God (Isaiah 26verses1-3). The Lord Jesus Christ is the example of the one who lived and breathed in the environment of the Word of God (Isaiah 11verses1-5; see also 2 Timothy 3verses14-17). Psalm 2 is a psalm of the kingdom age at the commencement of the rule of the Lord Jesus Christ and the futility of earthly rulers to resist his rule. Peter tells us in the Acts of the Apostles 4verses23-28 that the incipient fulfilment of these words applied to Herod's, Pilate's and the Jewish authorities' opposition to Christ and the preaching concerning his life, death, resurrection and coming kingdom. He is identified in Scripture as “a man after (God’s) own heart”. He is “the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel”. Wondrous promises were made to him, speaking of his seed, his throne – and eternity. Few others are spoken of in such terms. A great man indeed. But his name is also used to refer to one other man – the Lord Jesus Christ, his greater son. The name (or title) David appears on numerous occasions in prophecy, and it doesn’t speak of the man David. It speaks of the Master, reigning in righteousness, on the throne of his ancestor. What glorious lessons there are contained for us in these things, as we look to the day when “a king shall reign in righteousness” and when, ultimately, “all Israel shall be saved.” Brother Jonathan Cope[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_column_text css=""] Through Malachi, God promises that Elijah will be sent to the Jews before the great and dreadful day of the LORD. Although this promise is made to the Jews in the land, we believe Elijah's work extends beyond being send to the Jews living in the land at the time of the Lord's return. His work is to 'restore all things' - he will lead an exodus of Jews from all over the world, that like the first exodus will involve coming into the land of Israel. The prophets have so much to say about the restoration of Israel, it's a thrilling topic to look at because Israel's hope is the world's hope! "Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?...if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead". Thoughts on the Bible Readings for January 1st (Genesis 1, 2; Psalms 1, 2; Matthew 1, 2)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Thoughts on the Bible Readings for January 1st (Genesis 1, 2; Psalms 1, 2; Matthew 1, 2) Welcome to the start of a new year. When the Jewish people celebrate the Passover they say, "Next year in Jerusalem". May this year see the Messiah's second coming. The Old Testament is approximately twice the length of the New Testament; and, for that reason two portions of Scripture are taken from it daily. The plan we follow with the Bible readings comments is designed to complete the reading of the Old Testament once, and the New Testament twice, in the course of 12 months. We begin at the beginning, which is the meaning of "Genesis". It is not a scientific account of our origins - though it is 100% scientifically accurate as it is an infallible and inspired record from our Omnipotent Creator. At times some people are confused as to whether the Genesis account is literal - i.e. real - or a parable. Unquestionably the answer is it is both. Although it is not written to be a scientific textbook; it is 100% accurate scientifically and describes events that did happen. It tells us why we are here; and that God put us on earth for a purpose - "to fill the earth with His glory" (Numbers 14verses21; cp Genesis 1verses26). Genesis 1 describes 6 days of evening/morning duration. The Hebrew day begins at sundown and ends 24 hours later. Days 1-3 show a pattern - light; water; life - a pattern repeated in days 4-6. Chapter 2 tells us that God rested from His creative work on day 7 - the Sabbath. And in the Hebrew text for days 1-6 this pattern is followed - "there was a day, one ... two...right through to six". Genesis 1verses26 tells us that the Almighty's purpose was to fill the earth with people in whom the divine likeness - or character - would be seen cp also Psalm 8verses1-9. The Sabbath is the first day to have a name, which is emblematic of the Sabbath rest of the kingdom age (Hebrews 4verses8-11). Chapter 2 focuses more on the formation of Eve from Adam's side as the first marriage, which typifies Christ and his bride (the ecclesia - Ephesians 5verses22-33). Additional useful information is that the word translated as "creature" AV is consistently the Hebrew word 'nephesh' elsewhere translated throughout the Old Testament as "soul". Once the divine spirit in the form of breath is found within any creature it becomes nephesh chaim, or breath of life, which the LORD Good breathed into Adam in chapter 2verses7. Adam was a whole being and although like his animal counterparts of the dust he was brought to life directly by the Almighty breathing the spirit - or life-giving breath into him. This indicates the LORD God's intention to have a close relationship with His human creatures. The New Testament opens by highlighting the promised seed, this is Jesus, central to the monumental Covenants around which much of the Old Testament is structured. Matthew 1 is the genealogy of Mary the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ through king David. Luke's account of the genealogies of our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 3verses23-38 is Joseph's (Jesus' stepfather's)) lineage. Jesus' ancestral line through his mother Mary - note Luke's differs in that it gives Solomon as the progenitor of this line - who descended from David's son Nathan. The story of Matthew 1 links Mary with four other stigmatised women (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba), who, despite their public shame were, like Mary, outstanding women of faith. These women despite being stigmatised like Mary carried their scorn in their age just as our Lord Jesus Christ was accused of being born of doubtful legitimacy throughout his life. Jesus came into existence at the time of his birth. Prior to that time, he had no existence; except that His Almighty Father had structured the whole creation around the coming of His Son. The name Jesus means "the salvation of Yahweh", as Matthew 1verses23 tells. Matthew 2 describes the visit of the Magi and their costly gifts for the King of the Jews - a title that the Idumean Herod arrogated to himself - allowing us to date the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ to 6BC. Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt in the fulfilment of prophecy (Hosea 11verses1). The precious gifts of the wise men allowed Messiah's family to subsist in Egypt until it was time to return to their place of residence in Nazareth upon the accession of Archelaus following the death of Herod the Great in 4BC. Thoughts on the Bible Readings December 31st (Job 41, 42; Malachi 3, 4; Revelation 21, 22)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]If the example of pride presented in the hippopotamus repulsed us, far worse is Leviathan in chapter 41. He is the Nile crocodile, and is described as, "king over all the children of pride". Our Sovereign challenges Jobverses Try to subject and bring the crocodile under control. You can't do it with force; nor can you try to do it with persuasive words. Can you turn him into a servant, or make him an object of entertainment? In struggling with a crocodile, you will find that you have an impossible task on your hands. His hide and armour exceed that of the hippo. When he rages he is fierce beyond imagination. He scoffs all attempts to subdue him. Metal weapons, arrows and sling stones are futile against him. There is not his like upon earth. And it is with "him" that we must struggle on a daily basis. And without resisting him, i.e. our own human pride we cannot allow God's Word to humble us; in order that we may be able to draw near to our Creator King. In verses 1-6 of chapter 42 Job confesses his weakness and seeks for forgiveness. In verse 2 Job acknowledges, finally, the LORD's power and right to do with us as He wishes. The suffering servant's understanding of the Almighty has gone from a theoretical and untried faith to a faith that now entirety trusts his Maker, himself having been purged by his trials. Job had been proud of his relationship with the Almighty and yet he failed to understand God's right to test and prove him. Job had previously challenged God but now recognises his shortcomings. At last Job now has understanding of the infinite and uncreated power of the universe. In abject humility Job bows in reverence before his Sovereign. Verses 7-9 tell of Yahweh's rebuke of Job's 3 friends. The absence of Elihu from this group tells us that God is not displeased with him. The friends are told to offer sacrifices and seek for Job's intercession. Verses 10-17 explain that once Job had prayed for his friends God restored Job's losses twofold - except for his family; the presumption being that his lost family will be restored to Job in the Kingdom Age. Read aloud and slowly James 5verses11. Pause and ponder the principal lesson learned. In Malachi 3 verses 1-5 we have the missions of John the Baptist and our Lord Jesus Christ explained. They were the forerunner and the messenger of the covenant - two more of God's messengers. The Baptist was the preparer of the way, as Isaiah 40 outlined; and our Lord Jesus was the maker of the covenant of reconciliation. Additionally, our Lord would purge the corrupt Levitical priesthood; that they having been refined would come forth faithfully as tried gold (1 Peter 1verses4-7). Then will Judah's offerings be acceptable to the LORD and the oppressive ways of the priests of our Lord's day overturned. From verses 6-15 the prophet described the nation as robbing God - a charge which they vigorously denied. That failure was in not supporting the priests' maintenance through their tithes and offerings. And, although the Scriptures do not preach a prosperity gospel, their God would only bless them with rain and plentiful crops when they obeyed Him (compare Deuteronomy 27, 28). Other nations would acknowledge Israel as Yahweh's chosen and blessed people. The nation's arrogance and their sharp words of accusation against their Sovereign must cease. They had wrongfully asserted that God was distant and uninterested in their doings. The chapter finishes with a picture of God's love for His people. It shows a tender-hearted God yearning for His precious people - describing them as His jewels and beloved children. He yearns for the day when He will lavish His love on them. They are at the forefront of God's memory, presented poetically as a book. Chapter 4 describes the Great Day of Yahweh, when firstly the wicked will be consumed as chaff by the fires of judgment. Then the righteous will be blessed and prosper as fattened young calves and they will blaze brightly as the sun in their Father's kingdomverses Matthew 13verses43. For His Son, Jesus Christ the righteous, will be as the sun and he fill the earth with the understanding of his Father's Word and ways. The cherubic feet of the saints will reduce the wicked to ashes. Verses 4-6 bring together in their work 3 great servants of Yahweh - Moses representing the Law, Elijah that of the ministry of the prophets and our Lord Jesus Christ God's only begotten and beloved Son through whom the redemptive plan of the Father was sealed. These 3 were at our Lord's transfiguration and spoke of these matters. The book finishes with a dire warning, that unless the children of Israel's heart embraces the faith of their patriarchal fathers, the earth (eretz i.e. Israel) would be smitten with a curse. Thanks to the work of faithful saints such as John the Baptist that curse was averted and a faithful remnant will embrace their Messiah. Revelation 21 provides a glimpse of the perfect state of the earth at the end of the kingdom age. In the first 8 verses we see new heavens and a new earth. This is because there is no longer any mortal population - no nations exist, as there is no more sea. And as there is no more death it means there is no more sin. Finally, the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5verses8). No man can see God and live Moses was told; this is not the case for the immortals. God's people, Jews and Gentiles, dwell with Him as the prophet Hosea had said. The sorrows of their struggles before attaining to the Divine nature have been forgotten with the tender scene of their loving Father wiping away all tears. Everything upon earth has been renewed and perfected. The One declaring these things is the Alpha - the first and increate - and as the Omega (the final letter of the 24 lettered Greek alphabet) the bringer to finality of all things - "God all in all" 1 Corinthians 15verses28. Nothing that is morally corrupt is allowed in this perfected world. The vision of the new Jerusalem coming from God to earth is revealed in verses 9-27. It is described as a cube - perfect in each and every dimension. It is the 144,000 who are with the Lamb - 12 squared times 10 cubed. The Israel of God with admission gained via the 12 Apostolic gates each one based on a rare and precious gem. The transparent glass sea is indicative that there is no wickedness, only the tranquil calmness of full fellowship with the Almighty and His Son. This means there is no need of a priesthood, or Temple. No artificial light is required as the earth is full of the knowledge of the glory of Yahweh (Habakkuk 2verses14). Revelation 22 backtracks to a vision of the kingdom age. There is seen a "wood" (Greek "xulon"), meaning forest, of life on both sides of the pure river issuing from Messiah's sanctuary. The trees in this paradise bare 12 different types of fruits; and their leaves were the medicine for the healing of the nations - today 90% of medicines are derived from plants. As in Revelation 14 the faithful have their minds sealed by the Father's Word. In addition to this encouraging vision, verses 8-21 tell the faithful disciples that the coming of Jesus Christ is near and certain. The witnesses must faithfully guard the message from their Messiah. John sought to worship the one revealing that message, but was forbidden. Constant application to virtue must be maintained if the saints are to receive the reward the Lamb will bring. The tree of Life from which Adam and Eve were separated after sinning has once more been opened to the redeemed servants of Christ. Verse 15 exhorts us as disciples to practise truth and righteousness - there cannot be the Truth without individuals governing their lives by truth (Zechariah 8verses16). Jesus describes himself as the root (i.e. origin, or source Micah 5verses2) and offspring (i.e. descendant) of David. Verses 17-19 are a final call for the thirsty seekers of immortality to respond (cp Isaiah 55verses1-4). The Lord Jesus Christ says in verse 20 "I am coming speedily"; and John responds, in verse 21, together with ourselves, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Amen (let it be so)".
