The Myth of the IDF Aid Convoy

Over the past couple of days, it looks like the Biden administration has now publicly gone on the offensive against Israel, with more vigour than the previous months. The reason for this is likely something to do with Biden wanting to please his democrat base as the November elections loom ever closer.

Biden versus Netanyahu

For example, in the recent primaries in Michagan, 100,000 of Biden’s voting base abstained from voting for him, to register their protest against his Israel policies - calling for him to be even tougher on Netanyahu. Similar to the Labour party in the UK, the left wing base is pushing the leaders to further and further radical positions against Israel. Following this, Biden openly criticised Israel in his state of the union address, and was caught on a hot mic saying that he and Netanyahu were going to have a “come to Jesus” meeting about the situation, sounding ominous. Only today, Biden said that Netenyahu is quote, “hurting Israel more than he’s helping”. It is highly unusual for a president to make partisan comments about a political figure in a different countries democracy - particularly when it involves America’s strongest ally in the middle east. These critical comments and more have come amidst widespread criticism of Israel in the mainstream media for the way that aid has been distributed in Gaza.

The myth of the aid convoy massacre

On the 29th of February, for example, an aid convoy was swarmed by tens of thousands of Gazan’s as it entered the city of Gaza itself in the north. During the chaos, there was gunfire and 115 Gazans were killed. Similar to the incident with the Al Shifa hospital last year, this was broadcast around the world, largely as a massacre perpetrated by Israel on innocent civilians. The incident was described by Qatar’s ministry of Foreign Affairs as a “heinous massacre”. Emmanuel Macron, condemned the “shootings” and said he had deep indignation for the civilians that have been targeted by Israel. In their usual disastrous fashion, CNN put out a headline saying that 100 were killed when the IDF “opened fire as people waited for food” - Only a few hours after the event, it was clear that this is an egregious manipulation of the truth. Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the UN, in his own special world of Jew-hatred, “condemned” the incident and implied that Israel were not doing enough to get aid into Gaza. Even more outrageously, a resolution was put forward at the UN to blame Israel entirely for the 100 tragic deaths. The only reason this resolution did not pass, was because the US did not support it. The pattern is always the same - an initial horrific story emanates from the Gaza strip, causing shock waves around the world as the Mainstream media turn their word cannons on the Jewish people. Finally, when the facts of the case finally come out, the world has moved on, with the mainstream media finding some new way to blame Israeli forces in Gaza. This week, the results of the IDF’s probe into the aid convey tragedy was published. The aid convoy was driven by Palestinian contractors, who were driving a convoy of 38 trucks into the area of northern Gaza - Gaza city itself, at 4am in the morning. This is a common occurrence in Gaza currently. However, a crowd of some 12,000 Palestinians swarmed the convoy from the east and west, beginning to loot the supply trucks. At the same time as the trucks were looted, several Palestinians started to advance towards some nearby Israeli tanks. At this stage, the Israeli troops near the tanks fired precisely towards that group - Less than ten of the casualties were caused by Israeli fire. Drone footage now shows that the Palestinian contractors driving the trucks, continued moving while they were being swarmed, likely resulting in the tragically high death toll. Nevertheless, The condemnatory headlines that wizzed around the world have done their jobs - very few people are likely to pause and look back and consider what might actually have happened in retrospect. The demonisation of Israel is easy - The damage is done.

The Big Picture

Since the beginning of the war, 267,970 tons of aid has been delivered by 14,000 trucks. As reported by the American Jewish committee, Israel does not impose limits on the amount of aid entering the territory. In reporting stories of Israel’s Insufficient aid activities, news outlets like ABC news quote organisations like UNRWA, the corrupt UN organisation as evidence for this. The responsibility for the tragic situation for innocent Gazan civilians is something that lies squarely with Hamas. The purpose of considering incidents like this is not to make political statements but rather to see the way that the mainstream media is working to manipulate the narrative against the Jewish people.  In the words of Isaiah 59, truth as fallen in the streets. Reactionary, alarmist, condemnatory headlines fly across the world, even influencing policy makers in their decisions about Israel. We expect to see a rise in antisemitism in the last days, heralding the time when all nations will be brought against Jerusalem for battle. One of the hugely significant learnings of our post-October 7th world, has been the unleashing of a new level of antisemitism. The undercurrents for the way that the progressive left so quickly turn against Israel was something that could already be seen - but over the last few months, this has been on a whole new level. The media machine has snowballed a world-wide movement of Antisemitism. We hear genocidal slogans from the streets of London to the streets of Tehran on a weekly basis at the moment. Since the October 7th Terror attack in Israel the world’s attention has shifted from the Ukraine-Russia war to the situation in Gaza. However, the war there is still very much ongoing, with Russia believed to be poised ready to start a new offensive in the coming months.
  The situation in Ukraine has changed dramatically over the last 12 months. This time last year Ukraine held the initiative, the world was eagerly awaiting the Ukrainian ‘spring’ offensive. Ukraine had cutting-edge military tech rolling in on a daily basis from the West. Commentators were talking about the soon capture of Tokmak and even the possibility of Ukraine cutting the land bridge between Russia and Crimea, putting Crimea, the jewel of Putin’s crown, within artillery range. Russia was politically unstable; Prigozhin would soon attempt his mutiny march on Moscow. One year later the situation has turned to the worse in almost every way for Ukraine. Putin’s hold on power is strong, having won reelection with nearly 90% of the vote. Ukraine’s spring counter offensive became a summer offensive and then failed to achieve even the minimum objective to recapturing Tokmak. The military hardware, coming from the West has slowed and, in some cases, stopped, with further support from the United States held up in Congress.  Russia now undisputedly holds the initiative, producing three times the number of shells available to Ukraine, with the Russian economy having moved to a war footing, while the West’s economy is virtually unchanged. The minds and emotions of the West have lost interest in Ukraine, for the time being at least. Ukraine has become a far-off war, the shock of 2022 has long faded, and the cost of living is on the lips of the people. With the American election fast approaching the possibility of U.S military support being halted altogether, or pressure being put on Ukraine to come to an agreement with Russia is growing. Time certainly does not appear to be on the side of Ukraine, and with the war in a stalemate, time is king. Russia has a history of struggling in the early stages of a war, but performing impressive pivots to an unlikely final victory. The Red Army of 1945 was unrecognizable compared to the embarrassment of the 1941 routs at the hands of the Nazis. Bible prophecy makes clear that by the time of Christ’s return Russia is the dominant leader in Europe. Ezekiel 38 tells us that Rosh (Russia) will become a guard to Gomer and Togarmah (Europe). In the Hebrew, like the English, this can be read as a military protection, or as a guard guarding a prisoner. Either way, we see that Russia will be the dominant military in Europe and will lead Europe against God’s people Israel. Russia is presented as a strong nation, heading a “great company”, able to be like a “cloud to cover the land”, a nation which Britain and her allies are unable to stand up to accept for a minor condemnation asking if they are going into the land to “take a spoil”. A humiliating defeat in Ukraine would not rule out a rebuilt Russia being able to take on this role, but it would take time for Russia to rebuilt itself and it’s image. Should Russia come out of this conflict, as it came out of World War II, stronger than it had ever been, it would be well prepared to fill the role that Ezekiel describes it having in the end times. As the world’s attention drifts from one issue to another, the Bible believer sees that God’s attention does not shift with the wind as does man’s, but God will continue with his plan until it is fulfilled. to visit the BIN site.

Its the Hebrew word “beá¹­aḥ”. Currently of course the land is certainly not dwelling safely - nor has it really done so since the nation was born in 1948. In recent years the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza has been constantly launching rockets into Israel on a daily basis. The recent conflict, sparked by the terrorist attacks on October 7th last year is another case in point. So something has to change for the people of Israel to be “dwelling safely”. For many years the Israelis have attempted diplomacy. In fact in 2005 they withdrew from Gaza completely. Gaza is not occupied by Israel. The Palestinian peoples though elected Hamas - a decision which eventually led to the horrific attacks on Jewish civilians in October and the subsequent invasion of Gaza by the Israeli army.

Hamas Charter

Hamas’ charter, also known as  “The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement” was issued on August 18, 1988 and has not changed since then. Within it, it states: "The land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf [Holy Possession] consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgment Day. No one can renounce it or any part, or abandon it or any part of it." (Article 11) "Palestine is an Islamic land... Since this is the case, the Liberation of Palestine is an individual duty for every Moslem wherever he may be." (Articl e 13) "The day the enemies usurp part of Moslem land, Jihad becomes the individual duty of every Moslem. In the face of the Jews' usurpation, it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised." (Article 15) "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." (Preamble) Its clear from this aggressive stance that any diplomatic attempt with the Palestinians is not going to end in peace without the ideology of Hamas being removed. Its impossible for the situation described in the Bible to exist whilst groups like Hamas hold sway in the area. Therefore the recent war between Israel and Hamas is of great interest to the Bible student.  

Israel rejects Hamas Deal

Its interesting then as we watch events unfold. Unlike previous incursions into Gaza this recent war seems different. In response to the Oct 7th attacks, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared “We will take mighty vengeance for this wicked day”. He has repeatedly stated the goal of “destroying Hamas's military and governing capabilities.” (30.10.2023 gov.il) The Israelis resisted for some time the international pressure for a cease fire. At the end of October Netanyahu was quoted to have said “…the Bible says that 'there is a time for peace and a time for war.' This is a time for war. A war for our common future,” (30.10.2023 AA). It seems the Israelis are committed to dismantling Hamas in order to bring peace. And this assumption seems to be playing out. This last week Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected a peace proposal from Hamas. The Mail Online reported this in an article entitled “Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu rejects Hamas' 'delusional' hostage deal proposal and insists 'total victory' is the only path to peace” dated 8th February. The report went on to say: “Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Hamas's 'delusional' proposal for a hostage deal last night and pledged a 'total victory' was the only path to peace. The Israeli Prime Minister slammed the terrorists' demands as 'bizarre' and said to agree to them would 'only invite another massacre' when they are 'a finger away from a decisive victory’... the terror group demands also call for a complete withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza and would effectively allow Hamas to rebuild its military and remain in power. It also states that a third of Palestinians freed in exchange for the hostages would be those handed life sentences. Mr Netanyahu responded unequivocally, stating: 'Surrendering to Hamas' delusional demands that we heard now not only won't lead to freeing the captives, it will just invite another massacre.' 'We are on the way to an absolute victory,' Netanyahu said, adding that the operation would last months, not years. 'There is no other solution,' he said as he called for the 'total elimination of Hamas.' He ruled out any arrangement that leaves Hamas in full or partial control of Gaza and said that Israel is the 'only power' capable of guaranteeing security in the long term.” It seems then Israel is on the cusp of victory and in removing Hamas from power. Could this then pave the way for them “dwelling safely” as the prophets of the Bible have told us they would?  

Ultimate peace is coming

We know from our studies that ultimate peace will only be possible when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to the earth. In Isa 9:6 he has the title “The Prince of Peace”. It is only after the great battle with the nations and the establishment of the Kingdom that peace will truly be experienced by God’s people of Israel. Ezekiel 28 tells us about that time “Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. And they shall dwell safely (beá¹­aḥ) therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence (beá¹­aḥ), when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them rounad about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.” So we watch and wait for that day, with Bibles in hand knowing that God’s kingdom is coming soon.   Join us again next week for another Bible in the News Thanks for listening to this weeks Bible in the News, this has been David Billington. Governments around the world are increasing their spending on their military and discussing conscription in preparation for World War.

With Russia looking to overwhelm Ukraine, nations are wondering what is coming next. Governments around the world have increased spending, and there is a heated discussion beginning in many nations about reintroducing conscription. This is in keeping with Joel's prophecy to "wake up the might men" and "beat your plowshares into swords".
The scriptures are clear about the situation “at the time of the end”. The world will re-militarize in preparation for the coming conflict. Joel clearly outlines the call up: “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, Let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, And your pruninghooks into spears: Let the weak say, I am strong.” (Joel 3:9–10) The phrase “wake up” carries the meaning of “inciting, awakening, stirring up” armies of “mighty men”. The passage clearly speaks of the transition from a peacetime to a wartime footing. We have seen that clearly over the past few years, and these last few weeks have seen calls across the globe for an increase in armies, weapons and military spending.

Beat your plowshares into swords

A new report put out on Tuesday by the International Institute for Strategic Studies stated: “The current military-security situation heralds what is likely to be a more dangerous decade, characterized by the brazen application by some of military power to pursue claims — evoking a ‘might is right’ approach — as well as the desire among like-minded democracies for stronger bilateral and multilateral defense ties in response.’’ Global defense spending rose 9% to $2.2 trillion last year as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This is the biggest spend on defense in the history of modern mankind. The report also stated non-U.S. members of NATO have increased their spending by over 30% last year. Eleven countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are now meeting the requirement to spend 2% of their gross domestic product on defense spending. CBC news reported under a heading “As Europe’s armies brace for war, allies call on Canada and others to catch up.” The reporter stated the following: In Estonia, they're talking about building more public bomb shelters and making them mandatory in all newly constructed homes. In neighbouring Latvia, the government is going through the second draft of mandatory military service legislation. Next door in Lithuania, there's talk of universal conscription. "I understand that when we speak from the Baltic perspective, it might sound somewhat dramatic and shocking," the speaker of the Seimas, Lithuania's legislature, told CBC News Monday in Ottawa. "It is obvious that today, democracy itself, democratic countries, democracies all around the world are under pressure from Russia and its autocratic allies." The calls throughout Europe, especially amongst those nations bordering Russia are quite alarming. The same article stated: Two weeks ago in Sweden, a political debate erupted after the country's two top defence officials warned that war could be on the horizon. Sweden's Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin and its military commander-in-chief Gen. Micael Byden said people should prepare mentally for the possibility — and begin stocking up on supplies. The countries closer to Russia are the most aware of the immediacy of the threat. The Washington Post reported on February 12th: Most of the countries that spent beyond the 2 percent mark either share a border with Russia or sit near the front lines of the Ukraine war.  Poland — which shares part of its northern border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and a long stretch of its southeastern border with Ukraine — spent a greater share of its GDP on defense last year than any other member state, at 3.9 percent. Politics Germany reported the following February 14th: Germany will meet NATO's defense spending target of 2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) for the first time since the early 1990s, according to a Defense Ministry spokesman and NATO forecast released Wednesday. The concern with many European nations is the aggressive actions of Moscow – not just on the field, but in its preparations. The I.I.S.S. article continued: Moscow has an ambitious rebuilding plan. Russia's military spending in 2024 will increase to 7.1 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) and will account for 35 per cent of total government spending, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, chair of NATO's Military Council, stated the following was reported in the article as stating: "I think a nation needs to understand that when it comes to a war, as we see in Ukraine, it is a whole-of-society event. The West, he said, has for decades been labouring under the belief that "the professional military ... would solve these security issues that we had in Afghanistan in Iraq." That approach isn't good enough any longer, he said. "You will need more people from society to sustain the military in terms of people," he said. "You need the industry to have enough ammunition to produce new tanks, new ships, new aircraft, new artillery pieces. All that is part of this discussion of a whole-of-society event. "I think more people need to understand it's not just something of the armed forces and money. We need to be readier across the whole spectrum." The spectre of war — not just adventurous foreign wars, where elite soldiers are sent off on missions, but war on the home front, where every aspect of society is involved  —  is becoming a real and present danger. There has been an exponential growth in funding nations are spending on their military. According to a publication Defence and Military Analysis: Era of Insecurity, Russia’s territorial ambitions also have spurred several governments in Europe to refresh their security thinking. Germany published a first national security strategy, and the UK issued an update to its Defence Command Paper. All made clear that national security is no longer an afterthought and that looming challenges require serious attention. The paper went on to state that nations are “building back” their defences: Fighting in Ukraine has exposed how far armed forces and defence industries have fallen in their ability to rapidly replenish munitions stocks. In the aftermath of the Cold War, many Western forces drew down or largely relinquished stockpiles amid pressure from politicians to eliminate inventories that were judged excessive in the absence of a clear threat. Now, military leaders and some politicians acknowledge that was a mistake and are reversing course. The United Kingdom, as part of its updated command paper, said it would invest a further GBP2.5 billion (USD3bn) to make its munitions stockpile more resilient. Australia set up a guided weapons and explosive-ordnance enterprise to ensure adequate supply. Washington and Canberra also agreed to work together to enable the potential co-production of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems in Australia by 2025 and for the country to be able to produce some 155mm artillery shells. Germany expanded an existing framework agreement to buy 120mm tank ammunition from Rheinmetall, giving the company greater certainty over long-term demand. And at the end of the year Finland announced it would double ammunition production capacity by 2027. But realizing some of these ambitions proved problematic. The European Union was on track to miss, by a wide margin, its target of delivering Ukraine 1 million 155mm shells within a year by March 2024. This means fulfilling the words of Joel, and moving from a peace-footing to a war footing: Admiral Robert Bauer, the chair of NATO’s Military Committee, said governments may have to make some investments in industry to assure resilience in case of conflict. ‘If we want to have the ability to scale up because of a war, then we need to have factories that probably are empty and doing nothing for ten years, but when it is necessary, they need to be up and running within a month.’ In Britain, media outlets are also reporting of the alarm being raised by governments: Defence Secretary Grant Shapps warned recently that the UK is adapting to a 'pre-war world'. Former minister Tobias Ellwood, who served in the army, cautioned there is a '1939 feel to the world' and Britain is 'not prepared'. 'We've been too complacent. What's coming over the horizon should shock us. It should worry us and we are not prepared. 'Patrick Sanders is saying prepare for what's coming over the horizon - there is a 1939 feel to the world right now,' he told Sky News. 'These authoritarian states are rearming. 'There's a risk averseness about the West in wanting to deal with that and our global institutions such as the United Nations aren't able to hold these errant nations to account.' The article went on to state: While the UK is currently spending around 2.2 per cent of GDP, Sir Patrick pointed out Russia is 'spending nearly 40 per cent of public expenditure on defence'. 'This is not merely about the re-establishment of a Russian empire, it is about defeating our system and way of life politically, psychologically and symbolically. NATO’s Secretary General was reported by Politics Germany as stating: "This year I expect 18 allies to spend 2% of their GDP on defense. That is another record number," Stoltenberg said during a pre-ministerial press conference in Brussels. He said this represented a six-fold increase from 2014 when only three allies met the target. He praised an "unprecedented" 11% increase in defense spending in the 31-nation alliance. Military expert Professor Michael Clarke, a former director of the Royal United Services Institute told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. ‘The peace dividend is over. We don’t have any innate right to assume in Europe that we live in peace and security, by doing nothing we will not live in peace and security. We’ve got to do something about it. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which really crossed a line, in 2022 I think has been a wake up call...’ Once again, reiterating the words of the prophet Joel – and calling on the governments to “wake up the men of war.”

Wake up the Might Men

It is not good enough to have weapons and money. Armies are built out of soldiers. The time of the end sees masses of soldiers invading the nation of Israel. Ezekiel describes the host: “Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.” (Ezekiel 38:9) This great cloud is comprised of many people as he later describes: “And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.” (Ezekiel 38:15–16) Daniel likewise describes this host: “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.” (Daniel 11:40) Joel adds to the picture as well: “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision (or threshing): For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.” (Joel 3:14) The armies of the world have been dwindling over the past thirty years, since the fall of the Iron Curtain and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The alarm is being sounded all over the globe. Australia News .com reported: Earlier this month the chair of NATO’s military committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, said civilians in member states should be prepared for a potential future war with Russia. A large number of civilians would have to be called up if conflict accelerates in Europe, he added. The Daily Mail reported on General Sir Patrick Sanders, Chief of the General Staff in the UK: He said: 'We need an Army designed to expand rapidly to enable the first echelon, resource the second echelon and train and equip the citizen army that must follow. 'Within the next three years it must be credible to talk of a British Army of 120,000, folding in our reserve and strategic reserve. But this is not enough. 'Our friends in eastern and northern Europe, who feel the proximity of the Russian threat more acutely, are already laying foundations for national mobilisation. 'Taking preparatory steps to enable placing our societies on a war footing when needed are now not merely desirable, but essential.' Sir Patrick’s reference to a “citizen army” is a call for conscription. His call was echoed by Professor Michael Clarke, a former director of the Royal United Services Institute, who stated: 'Numbers matter... If we look at our experience in the 20th Century at some point, if you get yourself involved in war or if you are trying to deter a major war, at some point you have to be able to commit numbers – not just have a small force that when it is gone, it is gone. 'That’s what happened to us in the first and second World Wars, our professional army was effectively destroyed early on. 'But then that provided the core of a citizen volunteer army in the First World War, and then a citizen conscript army in the Second World War – much much bigger – which went on to win.’ General Sir Richard Sherriff, ex-deputy , ex-deputy supreme allied commander of the military organisation, warned that the UK defence budget is not big enough to expand the armed forces alone. He told Sky News: "Conscription to most professional soldiers, and I count myself as one, is absolute anathema. "Britain's armed forces have traditionally and culturally relied on long service volunteer highly professional soldiers with huge experience - and that is really the way we would all want it to go on." However, given the current global situation and defence funding cuts since the end of the Cold War, he said: "I think we need to get over many of the cultural hang-ups and assumptions, and frankly think the unthinkable." "I think we need to go further and look carefully at conscription," he said. During WWI, future Prime Minister Churchill, when he lost his role as First Lord of the Admiralty, joined the armed forces in the trench of Europe. Following suit, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson applauded General Sanders and encouraged young people to sign up for the military in his January 27th column. Boris stated So you betcha — if it really came to it, I would be there in the dugout with General Sanders, and I bet there are many readers who feel the same. Adding later on in his article: “If you want peace, prepare for war.” This is a prospect that that nobody wants to contemplate, and many politicians recoil from, but it is being discussed at high levels throughout the world. The German publication DW reported in December: Even conscription, something Germany ended in 2011, is also up for debate. "There were reasons at the time to suspend compulsory military service. In retrospect, however, it was a mistake," Pistorius told newspaper Die Welt earlier in December. He also cited the case of Sweden, where compulsory military service was suspended and then reintroduced. "I'm looking at models, such as the Swedish model, where all young men and women are conscripted and only a select few end up doing their basic military service. Whether something like this would also be conceivable here is part of these considerations," said Pistorius. Pistorius is the German minister of defence. In Germany, this is being touted on by the opposition as well: Johann Wadephul, deputy leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group, told DW: "The CDU's position here is clear: we are in favor of general compulsory service, i.e. service in the Bundeswehr, but also in other emergency services." The latter would include fire departments, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and a number of charitable organizations set up to help in crisis situations. Euro News also reported in January: With peace in the region no longer a given, many Western capitals began asking if conscription was a solution to their security fears, at times igniting firey debate. Lithuania in August announced plans to extend its draft, joining Denmark, while German and British politicians have suggested reviving compulsory military service. “Europe’s armed forces, particularly those on the border with Russia, now realise they don't have enough manpower,” said Vincenzo Bove, professor of political science at Warwick University, who specialises in conscription. "They clearly see conscription as a solution to that." This debate isn’t isolated to Europe. The Australian news agency news.com.au ran a headline on January 28th reading: Australia must consider bringing back conscription as ‘all-out war’ with Russia looms, expert says. The article stated: Rapidly rising global tensions in eastern Europe and the Middle East threaten to “drag Australia into an orbit of an open confrontation”, Dr Alexey Muraviev, Associate Professor of National Security and Strategic Studies at Curtin University, said. He added it may be “time for Australia to consider another uncomfortable subject — the return of national service”. “As the risk of Australia being drawn into a major war increase, we are facing a short window of opportunity to address some of the shortfalls in our defence capability.” The article went on to report former Prime Minister Tony Abbot in a speech to high school graduates: 'Saying to people who turn 18 or who leave school, "We expect you to spend a significant period of time, six months, 12 months, whatever, doing something for our country, giving something back, whether it's putting on the uniform and becoming at least a basically trained infantry soldier",' Mr Abbott said in a podcast.
  • The American navy has 333,000 sailors, and 1 million soldiers (including the air force)
  • The Russian navy has 160,000 sailors, and 1.16 million soldiers.
  • Germany has 16,500 sailors, and 170,000 active soldiers in its army.
  • France has 37,000 sailors and 118,000 active soldiers in its army.
  • Britain has 27,000 sailors and 76,000 active soldiers.
  • The Australian Navy has 15,000 sailors, with 57,500 regular soldiers in its army.
  • Canada’s navy has 8400 sailors.  The entire Canadian navy could fit on two US aircraft carriers (Including the reserves). The average US aircraft carrier requires 6000-6500 crew. The US currently has 11 in active service. The Canadian armed forces has approximately 68,000 armed forces.
  • New Zealand has 2,000 active sailors with 4,200 regular soldiers its army.
When the crisis predicted in the Bible arrives, there will be massive call ups across the globe as the nation’s take the roles assigned to them by the Bible. Many countries are discussing that call up now. We need to be prepared to face the challenges ahead. As we watch the Bible in the News, it is important to realize that no matter what the world thinks and plans for, the Bible tells us what is coming.

In recent years the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza has been constantly launching rockets into Israel on a daily basis. The recent conflict, sparked by the terrorist attacks on October 7th last year is another case in point. So something has to change for the people of Israel to be “dwelling safely”. For many years the Israelis have attempted diplomacy. In fact in 2005 they withdrew from Gaza completely. Gaza is not occupied by Israel. The Palestinian peoples though elected Hamas - a decision which eventually led to the horrific attacks on Jewish civilians in October and the subsequent invasion of Gaza by the Israeli army.

Hamas Charter

Hamas’ charter, also known as  “The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement” was issued on August 18, 1988 and has not changed since then. Within it, it states: "The land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf [Holy Possession] consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgment Day. No one can renounce it or any part, or abandon it or any part of it." (Article 11) "Palestine is an Islamic land... Since this is the case, the Liberation of Palestine is an individual duty for every Moslem wherever he may be." (Articl e 13) "The day the enemies usurp part of Moslem land, Jihad becomes the individual duty of every Moslem. In the face of the Jews' usurpation, it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised." (Article 15) "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." (Preamble) Its clear from this aggressive stance that any diplomatic attempt with the Palestinians is not going to end in peace without the ideology of Hamas being removed. Its impossible for the situation described in the Bible to exist whilst groups like Hamas hold sway in the area. Therefore the recent war between Israel and Hamas is of great interest to the Bible student.  

Israel rejects Hamas Deal

Its interesting then as we watch events unfold. Unlike previous incursions into Gaza this recent war seems different. In response to the Oct 7th attacks, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared “We will take mighty vengeance for this wicked day”. He has repeatedly stated the goal of “destroying Hamas's military and governing capabilities.” (30.10.2023 gov.il) The Israelis resisted for some time the international pressure for a cease fire. At the end of October Netanyahu was quoted to have said “…the Bible says that 'there is a time for peace and a time for war.' This is a time for war. A war for our common future,” (30.10.2023 AA). It seems the Israelis are committed to dismantling Hamas in order to bring peace. And this assumption seems to be playing out. This last week Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected a peace proposal from Hamas. The Mail Online reported this in an article entitled “Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu rejects Hamas' 'delusional' hostage deal proposal and insists 'total victory' is the only path to peace” dated 8th February. The report went on to say: “Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Hamas's 'delusional' proposal for a hostage deal last night and pledged a 'total victory' was the only path to peace. The Israeli Prime Minister slammed the terrorists' demands as 'bizarre' and said to agree to them would 'only invite another massacre' when they are 'a finger away from a decisive victory’... the terror group demands also call for a complete withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza and would effectively allow Hamas to rebuild its military and remain in power. It also states that a third of Palestinians freed in exchange for the hostages would be those handed life sentences. Mr Netanyahu responded unequivocally, stating: 'Surrendering to Hamas' delusional demands that we heard now not only won't lead to freeing the captives, it will just invite another massacre.' 'We are on the way to an absolute victory,' Netanyahu said, adding that the operation would last months, not years. 'There is no other solution,' he said as he called for the 'total elimination of Hamas.' He ruled out any arrangement that leaves Hamas in full or partial control of Gaza and said that Israel is the 'only power' capable of guaranteeing security in the long term.” It seems then Israel is on the cusp of victory and in removing Hamas from power. Could this then pave the way for them “dwelling safely” as the prophets of the Bible have told us they would?  

Ultimate peace is coming

We know from our studies that ultimate peace will only be possible when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to the earth. In Isa 9:6 he has the title “The Prince of Peace”. It is only after the great battle with the nations and the establishment of the Kingdom that peace will truly be experienced by God’s people of Israel. Ezekiel 28 tells us about that time “Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. And they shall dwell safely (beá¹­aḥ) therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence (beá¹­aḥ), when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them rounad about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.” So we watch and wait for that day, with Bibles in hand knowing that God’s kingdom is coming soon.   Join us again next week for another Bible in the News Thanks for listening to this weeks Bible in the News, this has been David Billington. Israel aim for 'Total Victory' against Hamas

Welcome to another Bible in the News. This week, Israel rejects Hamas ceasefire deal and aim at ‘total victory’. We review this in the light of Bible prophecy.
As students of Bible prophecy we are looking for the conditions the prophets have defined will exist before Jesus returns to the earth to establish God’s Kingdom. In the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 we read of the time period of “the latter days”. This is the time when the Jews have returned to their land after a long period of dispersion. We believe this relates to our day for it is only from 1948 that anyone could credibly say the Jewish peoples had revived again as a nation in the territory of their ancient homeland. Ever since then, despite conflict and difficulties they have returned and flourished in the land of their forefathers. The prophecy speaks about an invasion which takes place - nations from the areas of Russia, Europe, North Africa and the far East - attack the Jews living in Israel during which God acts to defend his people, the Jews. Connecting this prophecy with others such as Zechariah 14, Revelation 16 and Joel 3, we know that this is speaking of the the return of Jesus Christ and his visible manifestation on the earth. He will be the one who will defend Israel, destroy the invaders and establish himself as King over the Kingdom of God in Jerusalem. The dominion of the Kingdom will then spread across the world as nation after nation acknowledge him as their sovereign King. As it says in the prophec of Psalm 72:11: “Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.”

Dwelling Safely

Just before the invasion of Isreal though, the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 speaks about the people of the land of Israel “dwelling safely [or confidently]” (v11&28). Its the Hebrew word “beá¹­aḥ”. Currently of course the land is certainly not dwelling safely - nor has it really done so since the nation was born in 1948. In recent years the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza has been constantly launching rockets into Israel on a daily basis. The recent conflict, sparked by the terrorist attacks on October 7th last year is another case in point. So something has to change for the people of Israel to be “dwelling safely”. For many years the Israelis have attempted diplomacy. In fact in 2005 they withdrew from Gaza completely. Gaza is not occupied by Israel. The Palestinian peoples though elected Hamas - a decision which eventually led to the horrific attacks on Jewish civilians in October and the subsequent invasion of Gaza by the Israeli army.

How is it possible that employees of the UN could have been involved in the October 7th terrorist attacks against the Jewish people? The answer is because of an organisation called UNRWA - The United nations relief and works agency - an organisation apparently existing to deliver aid to the Gazan Arabs and those who were made refugees during the 1948 war of independence.
It has been reported in the last week that 12 UNRWA employees actively took part in the terror attacks of Oct 7. The Jerusalem post reported that UNRWA teachers wrote messages in support of Hamas’s massacre on October 7, calling the Hamas infiltrators “heroes.” They shared images of dead or captured Israelis and called for the execution of hostages. One “teacher” even urged Gazan civilians not to move out of harm’s way following IDF warnings and instead become human shields. Since the IDF began their ground operation in Gaza, they found Hamas’ military equipment hidden in schools. The IDF also discovered Hamas Nukhba military ballistic vests hidden in UNRWA bags in a medical clinic in Gaza. One of the hostages released from Gaza revealed that he was held for nearly 50 days in an attic by a teacher from UNRWA (a Gazan doctor held another one). A Gazan resident told the IDF (in a published recording) that Hamas has control over UNRWA, which is how the terror group has been stealing all the supplies. “Hamas has their hands on UNRWA administration workers, and it manages UNRWA,” he alleged. “From the day they [Hamas] rose to power, they took control of everything.” JP quote: “At this point, UNRWA has become fully responsible for allowing indoctrination and antisemitism to fester in Palestinian society, is actively helping Hamas terrorists and holding Israeli hostages, and has perpetuated the Palestinian refugee crisis since 1949.” Antisemitsim in UNRWA has been well-known for years, but this is the first time that this fact has been recognised by governments such as the US and UK - resulting in cuts to its funding. It was further reported by Reuters that the Israeli intelligence dossier accuses 190 UNRWA employees of being "hardcore" Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, while overall 10% of UNRWA staff was considered to have some affiliation with those organizations. Statistics of that should leave us wondering of there is a single employee of UNRWA who isn’t pro-Hamas.

Why does UNRWA exist?

Here is an interesting fact: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has less than 19,000 employees worldwide to manage 29.4 million refugees across the world, not to mention the tens of millions more internally displaced persons, asylum seekers and stateless people across 135 countries. UNRWA, on the other hand, employs 30,000 people, in Gaza to service a claimed figure of 5.9 million refugees. Who are these refugees? As stated above - Arabs who left their homes in 1948, anticipating and mostly rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of a huge genocide of the Jews by the multiple Arab countries who were invading nascent state Israel. According to UNRWA, those Arabs, along with their children and their grandchildren and their great grandchildren are all refugees. Because of this, UNRWA traps them in long-term refugee camps and uses them as political pawns, with the refugee label that limits them both politically and economically. Those refugees can also be found under Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese and Syrian rule as well. In those refugee camps, the Palestinians live in needless abject poverty and squalor, breeding hatred against the Israeli occupiers. UNRWA employs local Gazans to help breed genocidal and hateful slogans against Israel. UNRWA schools in Gaza have long since been known to be full of antisemitic, violent tropes that further radicalise the Gazan young people. So what really is UNWRA then? Not  refugee agency. Perhaps a welfare entitlement agency? Maybe a make -work project for the Gazan Arabs…Perhaps worse - a stream of money funding radical ideology, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The Hypocrisy of UNRWA!

The hypocrisy and lies of this organisation is beyond belief. On the UNRWA website, you can read about the lovely humanitarian work taking place - they talk about the healthcare they deliver, or the 700 schools they set up. They show heart rending pictures of the poor innocent children who they claim to help. They have pretty graphics about how they spend their funds. What they fail to mention is that they have direct links to Hamas. That some of employees are literally terrorists - and nearly all of the rest of them terrorist sympathisers. They fail to mention that their schools hotbeds for terrorist propaganda. That they take advantage of innocent children in Gaza, the further Hamas political aims. And that they directly contributed to the October 7th attacks. UNRWA is yet another example of the antisemitism that has been demonstrated by the United Nations. Joe Biden, funnelled a staggering one billion dollars to UNRWA since 2021 - after the previous Trump administration cut ties with UNRWA due to these very concerns. This means that the US, indirectly help to fund the OCT 7th attacks. UNRWA’s corruption was obvious long before Oct 7th. It’s a miracle that it’s taken the world this long to wake up to it. The irony is that since Oct 7th, the world has been lecturing and patronising Israel about allowing aid to Gaza. Israel have done what they can to allow aid in, but continually warned that this will go straight to Hamas. This objection has been largely ignored by the world, or judged to be a pitiable excuse. Suddenly, in the last week, nations have woken up to UNRWA’s true colours leading many to cut funding to this organisation. But imagine if Israel had done as the world had suggested in the last few months. They would have funnelled money and resources straight into the arms of Hamas. But there has been no apology from the nations who previously pressured Israel to fund their enemy. There’s been no acknowledgement that Israel were right all along.  Political leaders have bigger things to worry about. Israel had to stand alone acting on blatantly obvious information that the rest of the world chose to ignore until this week.

UNRWA's Response

UNRWA have released a statement on the 31st of January following the cut to their aid. “As aid organizations, we are deeply concerned and outraged that some of the largest donors have united to suspend funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)…The population faces starvation, looming famine and an outbreak of disease under Israel’s continued indiscriminate bombardment and deliberate deprivation of aid in Gaza.” Here is a UN organisation that is supposed to be apolitical, purely providing aid, not taking sides. Israel have literarily the least indiscriminate military targeting systems in the world. There is also no deliberate deprivation of aid - it just so happens that the main aid organisation is corrupt. What is more, UNRWA is using the famine starvation and the terrible plight of the Gazan population as a pawn to restore aid - this is after they have mercilessly sacrificed hundreds of thousands of Gazan young people, corrupting them to believe lies, in order to serve greater political aims. The real losers in this situation are any Gazan civilians who may be innocent, who want to be rid of Hamas. Not only do they live in a corrupt and bloodthirsty society, poisened by antisemitic propaganda. Not only to they live under corrupt leadership. Horrifically, their main aid organisation, who they rely on, is also corrupt. This is the awful situation brought about by Hamas in Gaza, with more than a little help from UNRWA.

Antisemitism in the 6th Vial

Revelation 16 describes the frog like spirits that will go out into all the world to gather them against the Jewish people. Those frog like spirits that result in antisemitism have often been associated with the spirit of humanism that arose during the French Revolution. (For more information please see Elpis Israel pag 391) The declaration of the rights of man and the citizen created during the French revolution was incorporated fully into the universal declaration of human rights - one of the core documents of the UN. As the UN embodies the frog like spirits of humanism,  it has also become one of the most antisemitic organisations in the world - in the past they have made statements such as “Zionsim is Racism” - a resolution that denies the right of the state of Israel to exist. We are living in times where antisemitism has reached terrifying heights. we are watching the frog like spirits move across the world, bringing nations together in their hatred for God’s chosen people and for his land - according to the 6th vial in Revelation 16 this can only lead to one thing. Armageddon Join us again next week for another edition of Bible in the News. Houthis and the Bible - Turmoil developing in the Middle East

As tensions boil over in the Middle East, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have once again been pulled military into the region. Reluctant as some of them may be to support Israel, they have had no choice but to lend their support to the region to defend their shipping interests. As the biblical "ships of a Tarshish", they have been called upon to protect the region. The Houthi attacks have forced them back into a role they don't want to take on. The fate of Yemen is also clearly outlined in the Bible.
As we watch the turmoil developing in the Middle East, the hand of the angels can be seen in the events unravelling. The angelic hand directs the nations as on their way to the revelation of Jesus Christ at the Battle of Armageddon:

“… to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” (Daniel 4:17) It is with interest we note the Tarshish powers being pulled once again into the Middle East. Although they have stated their desire to extract themselves from the arena, they keep on being pulled back in. The scripture is clear that there will be a southern confederacy at the time of the end, entitled the “King of the South” in Daniel 11:40. The nations that comprise this host are defined in Ezekiel 38:13 “Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?” (Ezekiel 38:13) The Merchants of Tarshish The merchants of Tarshish and its young lions correspond to the trading nations related to Great Brittan. Tarshish was the merchant power that moved from Tyre to Carthage, eventually settling in Britain. They are the seabound mercantile power that dated back to 600 BC: “The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.” (Ezekiel 27:25) It’s trade in tin and lead is identified in Ezekiel 27: “Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs.” (Ezekiel 27:12) The tin mines of Cornwall were notorious during the time of the ancients, mentioned by Julius Caesar in his “Gallic Wars” “The inland parts of Britain are inhabited by those, whose fame reports to be the natives of the soil. The sea-coast is peopled with the Belgians, drawn thither by the love of war and plunder. The island is well peopled, full of houses, built after the manner of the Gauls, and abounds in cattle. They use brass money, and iron rings of a certain weight. The provinces remote from the sea produce tin, and those upon the coast, iron....” (Julius Caesar, The Gallic Wars, Book 5, Chapter 12.) In 2019, tin ingots were located in the wreckage of a ship off the coast of Israel, and traced via isotopes to the tin mins of Cornwall and Devon. The Bible is clear on the role Tarshish would play with Israel in the latter days: “Surely the isles shall wait for me, And the ships of Tarshish first, To bring thy sons from far, Their silver and their gold with them, Unto the name of the Lord thy God, And to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee. And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, And their kings shall minister unto thee: For in my wrath I smote thee, But in my favour have I had mercy on thee.” (Isaiah 60:9–10) Identifying Britain with Tarshish, John Thomas wrote in Elpis Israel in 1848: I know not whether the men, who at present contrive the foreign policy of Britain, entertain the idea of assuming the sovereignty of the Holy Land, and of promoting its colonization by the Jews; their present intentions, however, are of no importance one way or the other, because they will be compelled, by events soon to happen, to do what, under existing circumstances, heaven and earth combined could not move them to attempt. The finger of God has indicated a course to be pursued by Britain which cannot be evaded, and which her counsellors will not only be willing, but eager, to adopt when the crisis comes upon them. The decree has long since gone forth which calls upon the Lion of Tarshish to protect the Jews. Upwards of a thousand years before the British were a nation, the prophet addresses themas the power which at “evening-tide” should interest themselvesin behalf of Israel. Britain undertook that role and was key in overthrowing the Ottoman power in the Middle East and promoting its colonization with the Jews as Lord Balfour would write in the famous Balfour Declaration: “His majesty’s government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object.” It would be a month later that General Allenby would walk into Jerusalem. By 1948, the State of Israel came into existence, and it was been surrounded by hostile nations until Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979, and Jordan in 1991. America and the other Tarshish nations have continued to play a role in the area, subduing the nations hostile to Israel, on the most part motivated by their own commercial interests. Tarshish In the Middle East A pattern has emerged over the years. In 1991 George Bush senior led an alliance of nations against Saddam Hussein to save Kuwait from being overrun, and protect American oil interested in the region. The years that followed would mire America in the politics of the region with Bill Clinton holding multiple peace conferences that gave birth to the disastrous Oslo Accords. George Bush Junior ran on a platform of isolationism, promising to bring America out of the region, only to have his policies turned on their head by the 9/11 attacks that brought the full force of America into Afghanistan and then into Iraq once again. President Obama changed America’s tune in favor of the Muslim states, undermining years of diplomacy, but the birth of ISIS would force America to stay engaged in the region. Obama’s policies soured relationships with traditional American allies in the region and forced the Saudi’s and other Arab states to begin covert conversations with Israel about security in the region. President Trump would reverse years of American dithering, recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Abraham Accords would see the first peace agreements between Israel and Muslim states since 1991. The process continued even after Trump left office with talk of an Israeli-Saudi peace initiative as late as September of 2023, even being reported in Aljazera under the headline “Israel-Saudi Arabia ‘normalization’ deal in reach, Netanyahu tells Biden”. Iran and its proxy Hamas would not sit by and allow such a shift. October 7, 2023 saw the launch of Hamas’ Al Aqsa Flood where close to 1200 Israeli’s were murdered by terrorists, 240 were kidnapped and over 4800 were injured. The ensuing Israeli operation in Gaza has brought world-wide condemnation against Israel. Western Tarshish nations have had a schizophrenic response to Israel’s plight. At one moment they support Israel’s right to defend itself, and then trying to tie its hands behind its back in doing so. The young lions have been much more critical of Israel. Canada’s smug prime minister Trudeau has rushed to the defense of the Palestinians, giving only a paltry nod of the head to Israel when forced. When the United Nations voted for a humanitarian cease fire in December, the United States voted with Israel; the United Kingdom abstained; Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa all voted against Israel. The Houthi Challenge to the Merchants of Tarshish However, this is not the trajectory the Bible outlines for the Merchants of Tarshish and the young lines. The picture painted in the Bible is of the mercantile powers gainfully operating in the region. They are there to protest in Ezekiel 38:13: “Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?” (Ezekiel 38:13) They form the King of the South that pushes at Turkey (the him in Daniel 11), triggering a response from the King of the North: “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.” (Daniel 11:40) Because of these scriptures, the angels have had to get involved, and they have done so with the activation of the Houthis. This small group of bandits in Yemen, named the Houthis, started firing on Western shipping interests entering the Red Sea. All of a sudden, the selfish interests of the merchants of Tarshish have been aroused. Time Magazine reported on the economic impact: Following the announcement, traffic through the Red Sea dropped by 35%. Commerce hasn’t been blocked completely, since most ships can opt for the longer but safer route around Africa, but the Houthis have increased the cost of shipping globally, imposing additional costs to commerce at a time when trouble at the Panama Canal has already made shipping more complicated and central banks worry about a new inflationary spike. If the Houthi “blockade” continues, the costs to consumers and the impact on local states will be considerable. The Houthis of Yemen were started by two brothers with the last name of al-Houthi who motivated Yemeni youth with summer camps featuring religious and political speakers such as Hassan Nasrallah the Secretary General of Hezbollah. The Houthi movement has been a reactionary movement focussed against American and Saudi-Arabian influence in the government of Yemen. Yemeni and Saudi government forces fought against the Houthi rebels, but with little success. The Arab Spring of 2011 saw a Yemeni revolution and allowed the Houthi’s to capture more territory. By January 2015 the Houthi’s had taken over the capital, dissolved the parliament and took over the Yemeni government. A coalition of Sunni Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Sudan led air strikes against the rebels in Yemen. The US helped plan and coordinate the attacks. The Houthi coalition broke down in 2017 leading to further civil war and the former president Salah was assassinated in his own home. Donald Trump’s White House Administration designated the Houthis a terrorist organization in January 2021. This designation was repealed by Biden’s White House Administration one month after Biden became president. This caused a rift between the Saudis and the USA. During 2022 the Houthi’s launched multiple missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Following the Hamas attacks on Israel, and Israel’s response in Gaza, the Iran-backed Houthi’s began firing missiles at Israel and at ships off Yemen’s coasts “in support of the Palestinian cause”. It is obvious they are supported by Iran as this rag-tag group of bandits has cruise missiles in its arsenal. This hostile action has brought a reluctant response of the “mercantile powers” into the region including Canada. The US Fifth Fleet which is stationed in the Gulf region has been responding (along with Britain) to the Houthi attacks on shipping, launching attacks on strategic Houthi military installations inside Yemen. According to a Reuters article published on January 10th: The attacks have seriously disrupted international commerce on the key route between Europe and Asia that accounts for about 15% of the world's shipping traffic. Many shipping companies have been forced to reroute vessels, taking the longer journey around Africa, although several oil majors, refiners and trading houses have continued to use it. German shipping group Hapag Lloyd said on Tuesday it would continue to avoid the Suez Canal and around the Cape of Good Hope for security reasons, while its Danish rival Maersk has said it would avoid the route "for the foreseeable future". The route around the Cape of Good Hope adds approximately 6000 km or 3500 nautical miles to get a container from Asia to Europe. It also adds about 10 days for goods to get there. According to the think tank ING, “this effectively means that 9 out of 10 containers on the Suez Canal route are currently sailing a longer way. As a result, global container capacity depletion could potentially go up by 20-25%.” Spot rates, including surcharges on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route, reached $4,400 US on 11 January compared to $1,170 at the start of December for a standardised 40-foot container. Most trade lanes across the world are indirectly affected, and global spot rates have doubled over the same period. Added to this is drought which has caused many companies shipping from Asia to the USA to avoid using the Panama Canal. Response of the Merchants of Tarshish and the Young Lions Although Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia may not support Israel in its moment of need, they will take care of their trade interests. In a joint statement the leaders of the US, the UK, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, South Korea and Bahrain, stated the strikes were undertaken following numerous warnings to the Houthis, and in accordance with the UN Charter: "These precision strikes were intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities the Houthis use to threaten global trade and the lives of international mariners in one of the world's most critical waterways." The “Five Eyes” intelligence organizations of the US, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia are all involved. According to Forbes the “Five Eyes”: Comprising five English-speaking countries, this powerful intelligence alliance has established an unprecedented era of surveillance and information sharing that continues to shape the world’s approach to national security. These nations collaboratively work on intelligence matters, pooling their resources and sharing sensitive information to ensure collective security and combat global threats. It is interesting that this “Five Eyes” group comprise the nations listed by Ezekiel as the Merchants of Tarshish with all the young lions thereof.” Statements from the different partners are worth considering. Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated the following: “This action was taken in self-defence. It was limited, not escalatory. It was a necessary and proportionate response to a direct threat to UK vessels and therefore to the UK itself. The threats to shipping must cease. Illegally detained vessels and crews must be released. And we remain prepared to back our words with actions.” He went on to state the Houthi attack "pushes up prices, and imperils the passage of goods, foods and medicines that the British people and others rely on". Sunak added the risk of not taking action: "would weaken international security and the rule of law, further damage freedom of navigation and the global economy, and send a dangerous message that British vessels and British interests are fair game". The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters that he had committed Australian military to assist: “We have sent the help that is required. We have operational support there at headquarters in Bahrain. We always give proper and considered analysis and act in Australia’s national interests and that has been the basis of our support up to this point.” Even Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, ever loathed to support Israel, stated: “The international community had a responsibility to step up, as laid out by UN Security Council resolutions, and we support the very targeted actions taken by military assets from the U.K. and the U.S.” Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and Defence Minister Bill Blair said in a statement Friday that Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel deployed with U.S. Central Command supported the operation. “Canada condemns the reckless Houthi attacks against commercial ships and crew operating in the Red Sea. They directly impact the flow of food, fuel, humanitarian assistance and other essential commodities to populations around the world, which can affect the global economy. We call on Houthis to cease their attacks immediately, and reiterate that they bear the consequences of their actions. We remain committed to working with our partners in the Middle East to help advance sustainable peace and security in the region.” According to Radio New Zealand: Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and Defence Minister Judith Collins have expressed New Zealand's support for strikes by the United States and United Kingdom against Houthi targets in Yemen. Peters said New Zealand was a trading nation which relied on international maritime law and the free flow of goods, and the Houthi actions affected the country's national security. "The Houthi attacks are illegal, unacceptable and profoundly destabilising. We and our partners have made repeated calls for them to stop," Peters said. "These warnings have not been heeded. The Houthis have only stepped up their attacks, as we saw on 10 January with the launch of further drones and missiles at commercial shipping vessels." RNZ also reported the New Zealand Defense Minister, Judith Collins stating: "This is a good example of the international community uniting to address a serious threat to international security.  Today's action demonstrated a shared commitment to freedom of navigation, international commerce, and defending the lives of mariners from illegal and unjustifiable attacks. Our aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea, but let our message be clear: We will not hesitate to defend lives and protect the free flow of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways in the face of continued threats." Saudi Arabia has not participated in the action, many believe as a snub to the Biden’s Whitehouse for delisting the Houthi’s as a terrorist organization and leaving it to stand alone against the Houthi attacks on its sovereignty. The Houthis are not considered terrorists when they attacked Saudi Arabia, or Israel, but they are if they attack US shipping.  This is a very hypocritical stance but expected by a world governed by avarice and greed. Bahrain has leant its support, a move that cannot come without Saudi acquiescence. It is fascinating to see the Merchants of Tarshish, known as the “Ships of Tarshish” with their associated young lions weighing in on the conflict in the region to protect their biblically designated “merchant” role in this arena. Impact on Egypt and Jordan The other impact is on Egypt. According to the publication “The New Arab” Egypt is being specifically impacted by the Houthi actions: The Red Sea also serves as the primary route to the Suez Canal, connecting major European consumers with significant suppliers in Asia. The canal facilitates about 12% of global trade, accounting for over $1 trillion worth of goods annually. Houthi attacks have heightened risks for vessels approaching the Suez Canal, and their attempts to disrupt global supply chains are already yielding initial impacts. Marco Forgione, Director General at The Institute of Export & International Trade, told The New Arab that Houthi attacks on commercial ships have significantly increased fuel costs, impacting Egypt's revenue from shipping tolls. NDTV World reported of Egypt on January 11: Attacks by Yemen's Huthi rebels in the Red Sea have caused shipping companies to avoid the Suez Canal -- a key source of revenue for Egypt as it battles a deep economic crisis. International Monetary Fund figures show that 35 percent less cargo was transported through the Suez Canal in the first week of 2024 compared with the same period last year. Analysts say the financial impact, though limited for now, will become painful if Huthi attacks keep throttling traffic through the main maritime artery connecting Europe and Asia. The man-made waterway — which officially opened in 1869 — is crucial for Egypt, earning it $9.4 billion in transit fees in the fiscal year 2022/23. Suez Canal revenues are especially vital for Egypt amid the economic crisis during which the local currency has lost half its value since March 2022 while inflation tops 35 percent. Egypt's economy also relies heavily on tourism and on remittances from Egyptian workers abroad, which fell almost 30 percent in July-September 2023 on year, according to the central bank. Amid the downturn, the Arab world's most populous country has relied heavily on Suez Canal income both for its military and for social welfare spending.   Jordan has also been experiencing a severe revenue drop. The publication C-Tech reported in mid-December 2023: According to data published this week in Jordan, cargo handling at the port of Aqaba decreased by 16% last month. The number of ships arriving at the port of Aqaba, which is Jordan's only outlet to the sea, decreased that month by 14%, and there was also a 33% drop in roll-on/roll-off ships (carrying cars). This decline is a direct result of the security situation as well as the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Jordan, which is also in a delicate economic situation, has in recent years placed emphasis on the development of the Aqaba port and the surrounding economic area as a national project that can drive growth and attract foreign investment. What has been happening since the Houthi attacks began does not help these plans. This article was published in mid-December. The shipping through the Red Sea has decreased significantly since then, putting pressure on both nations. Although they have been silent, they are hurting economically, and regardless of their politics, they need the US-led alliance to protect their economies. But what of Sheba? The other inescapable fact is Yemen is the historical location of “Sheba”. Ezekiel 38:13 is clear that Sheba and Dedan are allied with the Merchants of Tarshish and the young lions and protest the Russian invasion of the Middle East. The nation of Sheba was a mercantile nation of history rich in spices, gold and precious stones: “The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.” (Ezekiel 27:22) The queen of Sheba visited Solomon during his reign bringing gifts of spices “And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.” (1 Kings 10:10) The ancient damns of Sheba used for the irrigation of the spice beds have been located near the ancient city of Marib, the capital of Saba or Sheba. These damns captured the monsoon rains and stored them for irrigation. This city straddles the border between the Houthi controlled area of Yemen and the government controlled area of Yemen. It is about 187km (3.5 hour drive) from Sana’a the former capital of Yemen, now the Houthi capital of Yemen. The Al-Dailami airbase in Sana’a was hit by US missiles on January 11th. This area has to fall under a regime that works in cooperation with Saudi Arabia (Ancient Dedan) along with the Merchants of Tarshish and its young lions. We can expect to see a dramatic shift in Yemen where this rag-tag band of rebels supported by Iran will be subdued in the coming years. The scriptures speak of them protesting Russia’s invasion of Israel – so a change of government and policy must take place in the near future. How that is achieved, we have yet to see, but their success in their current endeavours is an impossibility in light of the scriptures, save and except to bring the Tarshish powers back into the region again.
