Daily Readings & Thought for March 24th. “THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND …”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers 5), (Proverbs 2), (Luke 16)  What leads to a truly understanding mind – one of which God approves?  We have a marvelous chapter (2) in Proverbs today which shows us the right way to “find the knowledge of God” [v.5] and shows us that this is far more than what we might call ‘head knowledge’ – developed purely by intellectual investigation and deduction.  We especially notice the significant little word ‘if’.  The chapter starts , “My son, If you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding …” [v.1,2] That is the start of it, that is laying the foundation – what follows?  “ If you call out for insight, and raise your voice for understanding” [v.3}  How do you do that?  It seems to us this is the earnestness and intensity of private prayer in seeking a full awareness of God.    Solomon further emphasizes the complete dedication that is needed – another “if” follows.  “If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear (awe) of the LORD and find the knowledge of God” [v.5]  This is the ‘knowing’ of God surely – the establishing of a real relationship through prayer and the actions and experiences that then flow. The verses which follow indicate the wonder of that relationship, how the LORD (and subsequently his Son) “is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints” [v.7.8]  What depth of perception then results, it is far more than intellectual knowledge  for “then you will understanding righteousness and justice  and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.” [v.9,10]   Consider the final perceptions of Job, he confesses to God, “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself …” [ch.42 v5,6 – note v.3]  Thoughts which parallel Paul’s appeal to the Ephesians that God “may give you a spirit of wisdom … in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.” [1 v.17,18]  May our hearts increasingly develop this kind of wisdom, “then you (and I) will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge (knowing) of God.”    [vc_column_text]   [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cvfjGSwHfQ[/embedyt][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]https://www.podbean.com/site/default/externalPodcastBadges[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] https://christadelphianvideo.org/tftd/daily-readings-thought-for-march-24th-then-you-will-understand-2/?feed_id=33291&_unique_id=641c386c9b9c4

The Immortality of the Soul - Questions that need answers! #shorts #reels #@Christadelphians

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="none"]Scripture does not directly speak of or teach the doctrine of the immortal soul. Indeed, this term never appears in the Bible. It would appear that pagan beliefs held in the kingdoms of Babylon and Egypt, and the teachings of the likes of Pythagoras, Socrates and Plato, became incorporated into Jewish and Christian religion in the years following Christ’s death. It is, then, a belief that is man-made and not God-given. Any passages of Scripture that appear to support such teaching must be interpreted with this crucial information in Thus, when, for example, Stephen as he died said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59), he was speaking, not of an immortal soul, but of that breath without which we die If Adam had possessed an immortal soul, then the pronounced punishment on Adam following his disobedience—“dying thou shalt die”—would have been to no avail, if he or part of him continued in some conscious and active If we have an immortal soul, life continues whatever happens at How can this be reconciled to the Scripture, which says that “our Saviour Jesus Christ . . . hath abolished death, and hath brought life . . . to light through the gospel” (2 Tim. 1:10)? It cannot. We have no immortal soul. When we die the whole of us dies, and those responsible await the return of the Lord Jesus Christ to effect their resurrection, and then, by God’s grace, have immortality bestowed upon them. The Newest Chapter in Israel's War of the Dreams.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="none"]
The Newest Chapter in Israel's War of the Dreams
Comments on the Judicial Reforms in Israel
iTunes Download Badge    Google Podcasts Download Badge    PodBean Podcast Badge
[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kRwgDH1hS8[/embedyt] The recently sworn in government of Israel, is by far the most religious, right wing government in Israel’s history. The repercussions of this government have already been felt in many ways. One of the hallmarks of the new government’s first months in office has been the controversial Judicial reforms.
These reforms were in fact mandate that many parties stood on during the elections last year. The changes planned by the new government have been decried as an attack on democracy, with many influential voices on the left in Israel speaking out against them. For example, Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition said that if the government doesn’t stop, there will be no democracies left in the middle east, adding that this reform was an “extreme regime change”. This week is the 10th week of protests against the reform, with the Times of Israel claiming that over 300,000 people attended rallies across the country today. Even the president of Israel, Chaim Herzog, who is supposed to be neutral figure, has called for the government in no uncertain terms to abandon the quote “disastrous legislation”. Some Israeli Pilots have refused to show up for duties, the banks have said it will deter crucial foreign investment. In the US, democrat members of congress have sent a letter to Joe Biden urging him to “use all diplomatic tools at his disposal” to stop the Israeli government from carrying out its planned reform.

The Questions...

So here are the questions; What are these Judicial reforms all about? Why has it caused this enormous rift in Israeli society? Finally, why are these reforms important from a Biblical perspective? Firstly in order to understand the reforms, we first must understand the role of the Supreme Court in a democracy. The Supreme court, in the context of a parliamentary system, is there to interpret and apply the laws that are acted by the Parliament and check their validity against the nation’s constitution. So what are Israel’s legal reforms all about? There are 4 main components to the proposed Judicial reform:
  1. The reform would change how the supreme court justices are selected - giving sitting MKs more influence in their appointment. Incidentally, this would bring the system closer to the American way of choosing justices.
  2. The plan includes changing the law so that government ministers would be able to appoint their own legal advisors. These legal advisors would lose their power to make binding decisions and instead, only be able to issue advice.
  3. The Supreme court would be required to base their judgements on the law rather than on the on the so called “grounds of reasonability.
  4. Finally, the Override clause. This means the Knesset would be able to override Supreme Court decisions  with a simple 61 MK majority. In many ways this clause is seen as the gun on the table in a sense. Without it, the Supreme court could technically strike down the new legislation the minute it left the Knesset. In fact, in the UK, the ultimate decision remains with Parliament not the judiciary. Parliamentary sovereignty, is a principle of the UK constitution
You may be thinking along with me that there is nothing particularly startling about these reforms. There is very little reason why any of these changes should result in the end of democracy in Israel as so many on the left have claimed. In fact, it strengthens the power given to the people, rather than to a self-elected group of judicial elites at the top of Israeli society. In many ways, the reforms seek to limit the supreme courts power to something that is closer to many other western democracies. So the question remains; Why have these reforms caused such a gigantic chasm in Israel society? Caroline Glick, who is an American-born Israeli columnist, journalist and author has this to say; “In Israel as in states throughout the Western world, the political Left is an ecosystem of power, and not merely a political camp. It starts with the parties of the center- and far-Left. But it encompasses far more powerful institutions and actors, as well. These include the universities, the vast majority of media organs, most of the entertainment industry, and much of the economic elite. The Left also comprises the senior ranks of the security establishment—represented most clearly by politically active retired generals. The most powerful component of the Left's ecosystem in Israel is the legal fraternity, which is comprised of the Supreme Court, the attorney general, the state prosecution, and the legal advisors to the Knesset and the government ministries. Despite its control over vast power sources in Israeli society, the Left does not control the Israeli people themselves. A significant majority of Israelis define themselves as right-of-center (as per the recent election)” The supreme court is the greatest stronghold of the political left in Israeli society. The last few decades have seen the rise of the right wing and particularly religious zionism in Israel. The ferocity of these protests, in my opinion, have very little to do with the actual legal detail of the reforms and more to do with the general direction of the country. The reforms could be seen as the final straw - The point at which the Left wing have snapped in Israel.

The War of the Dreams

It exposes a deep-rooted fault line in the nation. Two fundamentally different views of Zionsim. The political left, see Zionism as a secular movement, seeking to find Israel a place in the world and be just like the other nations around them. The right wing on the other hand want to emphasise the Jewish ethno-national nature of the state of Israel, with the religious Zionist camp taking this further to say that the state is a vehicle in God’s redemption process for his people. There is a fundamental war of the dreams in Israel. And the right wing has been winning the war for decades. Over the past years, Religious Zionism has made a relentless rise to the top, now controlling many influential positions in the government. Some minsters themselves are now settlers from the west bank. This is the true battle in Israel right now, not the judicial reforms per-se.

The Latter-day Religious Conflict

Why is this important as far as Bible Prophecy is concerned? There are many passages in scripture that lead us to believe that the controversy of Zion at the time of the end will have strongly religious overtones. The very phrase, “the controversy of Zion” as written about in Isaiah 34:8 is clearly a religious conflict. This controversy has been played out down through time between God’s people and Babylon the Great, or the Roman Church as Revelation describes. The Beast of Europe, pictured in Revelation 17 is ridden by a woman, the “great whore”, a definitively religious symbol. When the nations come against Jerusalem, they we read in Joel 3:9, they say “prepare war”. The Hebrew for this is “sanctify war”. This sanctification is a religious idea. When Russia makes her grand move for the building up of her image empire, the religious aspect of the two feet of Eastern and Western Rome will be re-united. The Greek, or Eastern Orthodox Church along with the Roman Catholic church will work together to bring about the invasion of Israel. Finally, the Catalyst for the gathering of the nations to Armageddon is described in the six vial in Revelation 16. The froglike spirts, the teachings of humanism, are a major factor in bringing the nations against Israel. Graeme Pearce has this to say: “It is plain from Revelation 17-18 that the papal system is the religious part of Babylon the Great. We can imagine the Pope expressing great indignation at the Jewish developments in the land of Israel, and the probable  desecration of “their” holy places.! So it is fitting that the papacy shall be the religious head of this great confederacy , which coming down upon the land, brings to a climax the controversy of Zion and receives a recompense at the hand of Christ.” We expect to see a religious spirit in the land of Israel prior to the Gogian invasion and particularly on the mountains of Israel. The Judicial reforms have exposed the deep fault-line in Israeli society and demonstrated just how far the religious right wing have come. The state that began last century as a left wing socialist movement is morphing into something very different in front of our eyes. These are times of change. The night is far spent and the day is at hand - let us put off the works of darkness and walk as the children of the light. This has been Daniel Blackburn joining you for this week’s edition of Bible in the News.

The rallying of Tarshish & her young lions.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="none"]
The rallying of Tarshish & her young lions
The AUKUS deal in the light of Bible prophecy

This week we witness the AUKUS deal - signifying Tarshish and her young lions rallying together and strengthening ties as we’d expect from Bible prophecy.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTncSC1cFvI[/embedyt]

The nations before the return of Christ

In the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 two sets of nations are depicted as forming on the world stage just before the return of Christ.

One set is an aggressor who invades Israel and is described in verses 1-9. It’s headed up by a leader called Gog, who, amongst other features is called the “prince of Rosh” (v2) or The Rus - an ancient name for the Russians. This Gog, leads a confederacy of nations against the people of Israel before they are defeated. The other set of nations seems to challenge the invader but is unwilling or unable to do much about it. This set is in verse 13:

“Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?”

Shebah and Dedan

To unlock the meaning of the prophecy the diligent student must do some research into these ancient names in order to identify their modern equivalents.

Looking at the Biblical evidence one can easily identify Sheba and Dedan as being Arab peoples residing south of Israel (see 1 Kings 9:26 and 1 Kings 10:1 and Jeremiah 25:23-24). When looking at more secular history we find we can even more closely identify them as the Southern Gulf Arab peoples.

Tarshish

The identity of Tarshish has been discussed at length in the Bible in the News and has been shown to be Great Britain. There are many clues that help us to make this identification. Perhaps the most notable identifying feature is that Tarshish was a place from which metals such as silver, iron, tin and lead came from around the time of Soloman (Ezekiel 27:12). The only location known to have been mining these rare metals  in vast quantities in these ancient times is Great Britain. The idea that tin from Britain was transported and traded in the Middle East around the time of Soloman was confirmed in 2019 when a peer reviewed paper was published with evidence that tin from 27 ingots found at 5 ancient eastern Mediterranean shipwreck sites all came from Cornwall.

The young Lions of Tarshish

So then before the return of Christ we expect the merchants of Britain (Tarshish) to be trading in the area of the Gulf states (Shebah and Dedan). But there is another hint that Britain will not be alone in her enterprize for the prophecy, rather enigmatically states that Tarshish is trading there “with all the young lions thereof”.

The context here is of nations. Tarshish here is being described as a Mother Lion - but with her are her Young Lions. These are not Lion cubs - baby lions reliant on their mother. These are Young Lions who can fend for themselves.

We read of this concept, albeit in another context, in Ezekiel 19:2-3.

“What is thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions. And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey”

So a lioness nourishes whelps who grow to become young lions who catch their own prey.

Tarshish, the political power of Great Britain then is a mother lion. In the latter days she will have independent political offspring who will stand independently of her and have the ability to fend for themselves.

What is being described is a colonial power - where colonies have matured to become powers now in their own right.

Who are the Young Lions?

Which nations could qualify to be Britain's young lions? Which nations were once governed by the British but are now independent nations in their own right?

Perhaps the biggest one of these would be America. The American Revolutionary War was fought between 1775 and 1783 in which American Patriot forces under George Washington's command defeated the British, establishing and securing the independence of the United States.

Another Young Lion nation would no doubt be Australia. Previously governed by Britain, in 1901, six colonies united to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Full independence came in 1931 when full legal status was given for the independence of Australia. This was adopted in 1942.

These two nations are now independent but still very much connected to their mother. We can expect these, and other nations like Canada and New Zealand to continue to form trade ties with Britain - especially post Brexit as the prophets of the Bible have described them as being active trading partners in the Gulf in the latter days.

The news this week - Tarshish rallying her young Lions

When we look up from our Bibles and consider the news stories this week we are therefore not surprised to see a significant deal being done between Britain, America and Australia. The deal is known as the AUKUS deal.

The BBC reported on this on the 14th March. It ran a head line entitled “Aukus deal: Summit was projection of power and collaborative intent”. The report stated “The imagery and words working in unison: old democracies coming together to counter a new and growing adversary - China. The submarines deal will create thousands of jobs in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, in Derby and elsewhere.”

Another report by the Guardian explained that “In a tripartite deal with the US and the UK, Australia has unveiled a plan to acquire a fleet of up to eight nuclear-powered submarines… Nuclear-powered submarines have a distinct advantage over the diesel-electric boats of Australia’s fleet because they don’t need to surface to “snort” to recharge their batteries. Nuclear subs can leave port and stay underwater for weeks, avoiding detection.”.

We can see then Tarshish rallying her Young Lions as we would expect from the prophecies of the Bible.

The response of the Rus

Perhaps what was also interesting was the reaction of Russia. Routers ran a report on the 14th of March entitled “Kremlin says AUKUS submarine deal raises proliferation questions” The report went on to say “Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "There are a lot of questions here related to the problem of non-proliferation. Here we need special transparency, and we need to answer the questions that arise…” Russian President Vladimir Putin has been critical of AUKUS since its inception in 2021, accusing it of fuelling regional tensions by trying to counter China.”

Russia is clearly not in favour of this deal. Russia's anti-US stance was seen in full this week when a US drone was downed. According to CNN “The White House slammed Moscow’s actions as “unsafe, unprofessional and reckless” while Russia’s defense ministry denied its aircraft came into contact with the drone. But dramatic footage that was declassified on Thursday seemingly shows the Russian jet emitting a plume of fuel over the drone, causing its camera systems to cut off. Russian and US aircraft have operated over the Black Sea during Moscow’s war in Ukraine, but this is the first incident of its kind since the conflict began – and it threatens to heighten tensions between the two countries further.”

We can clearly see then the US and Russia on different sides of growing tensions.

Tarshish doing deals in Shebah and Dedan

In other news this week we also want to highlight growing trade alliances between Britain and the Gulf States. In June 2022 the British launched an ambitious free trade negotiation between the UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council which is slowly gathering steam.

On March 13th, The National News ran a headline “UK hails 'trade wins' with Saudi Arabia and UAE as GCC talks enter third round”. It reports “The UK has landed a series of “trade wins” before the third round of negotiations with the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), including a £6 million ($7.25 million) boost for honey producers and a female-focused mission in the UAE. As negotiators sat down for talks in Saudi capital Riyadh, Britain’s Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch welcomed the early progress in trade relations with Gulf nations as hopes of a £1.6 billion pact increase…The GCC — which comprises Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the UAE — is seeking to capitalise on the UK’s post-Brexit eagerness to strike lucrative trade deals with global partners. Ms Badenoch painted a positive outlook for negotiations with the GCC, nine months after meetings began. She said such a treaty would support British manufacturers and improve the prospects of the green energy industry. “I’m very pleased that we’re heading into our third round of negotiations with the GCC,” the government minister and former Conservative Party leadership contender said. “A free trade deal with the Gulf will strengthen supply chains and grow our food and drink, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors. “Trade deals like this one open up new opportunities for UK businesses, such as removing even more market access barriers harming UK competitiveness globally, like the one we successfully scrapped preventing UK honey getting into Saudi Arabia.”

We not only see evidence of the Lioness and Young Lions rallying around each other we also see that trade with Shebah and Dedan is set to increase. This is exactly as we would expect from what the Bible has propheciesd will happen in the time just before Jesus returns.

Heralding the return of Christ

These events then herald his return to this earth. To sit on the throne of his father David (Luke 1:32) and to rule the restored Kingdom of Israel as is his right (Ezekiel 21:27). That Kingdom, God’s kingdom, “shall be established for ever” (2 Sam 7:16). This coming kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all the kingdoms of men, and it shall stand for ever (Daniel 2:44). So the question for us all, as we see the signs of it becoming a reality - is, are we ready? Have we got ourselves right before our God. Have we repented, been baptised and been seeking to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. (Phil 2:12).

This has been Matt Davies joining you. Join us again next week as we watch the signs and as we patiently wait for the return of Zion’s king.

Daily Readings & Thought for March 23rd. “THE BEGINNING OF KNOWLEDGE”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers4), (Proverbs 1), (Luke 15)  Today we start reading “the proverbs of Solomon” [v.1] and the key verse that jumps out into our eyes is “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” [v.7].   Our minds should be filled with awe as to all that God must be!! It  is the beginning or foundation of wise thinking. The plea of Solomon is, “”Hear my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.” [v.8]  The acceptance and absorption into our minds of such teaching and instruction is like wearing “a graceful garland” – yet today how many parents are able and willing to teach true wisdom to their children?  If they are able and willing – their children are surrounded by counter influences – but the need for “wisdom and instruction” has never been greater. The message contains a strong warning about the ‘opposite’ to true wisdom, the attitude of those who have no time for God – so the blunt warning is made, “if sinners entice you do not consent” [v.10].   Virtually no one thinks of themselves as being a ‘sinner’ these days, sin is an obsolete word!  But there is no middle course; the book of Proverbs makes this plain, if you are not on God’s side seeking his will and guidance in making your pathway in life, you are against him. Wisdom is personified and “cries aloud” – at the same time “scoffers delight in their scoffing.” [v.20,22]  But ‘wisdom’ says, “If you turn at my reproof, behold I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you” [v.23] and we can see that God’s Spirit has led to the Bible being written and preserved and our daily feeding on God’s word will guide our lives.  The chapter fittingly concludes, “the complacency of fools destroys them, but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.” May we help each other to have ears ready to listen.  [vc_column_text]   [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC9KYoSKZv4[/embedyt] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]https://www.podbean.com/site/default/externalPodcastBadges[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] https://christadelphianvideo.org/tftd/daily-readings-thought-for-march-23rd-the-beginning-of-knowledge-2/?feed_id=33312&_unique_id=641ae6f7d1080

Daily Readings & Thought for March 22nd. “AND DOES NOT HATE …”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers 3), (Psalm 148-150), (Luke 13,14)

There are no grey areas in the teaching of Jesus, yet life today contains many grey areas, human legislation in most countries appears to us in many ways to bend over backwards to allow all kinds of behavior; you can live and behave as you like as long as you do not tread on anyone else’s toes, as the saying is.

These thoughts entered our minds as we read the teaching of Jesus in Luke ch. 14.  It tells us “Now great crowds accompanied him.” [v.25].  Imagine the scene, how popular he had become, but it was not of the same order of popularity that many ‘stars’ achieve today.

But, suddenly Jesus is very challenging in a personal sense!  “He turned and said to them, ‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” [v,25,26]

What are we to make of the word “hate”?   The Greek word occurs 42 times in the New Testament and is always translated as hate, hateful, hated, etc in the A.V.  What we learn is that, from the Divine perspective there are no grey areas, if one does not love – then one is counted as ‘hating’.

But the words of Jesus demand that we put them into a scriptural perspective. Nowhere in the New Testament do we find the word “opinion” – yet our world today uses it abundantly!  The context in which Jesus uses the word hate implies he counts some things, many things, as of no importance.  In following in his footsteps to “come after” Christ, we must see life’s values (or lack of them) as he sees them.  We need to each ask ourselves, ‘What is of first importance in my life?’

If we are really following Christ and putting his principles into practice in the way we live - then this will direct the decisions we make, this will totally push to one side all other things we think of and do, they will have no priority in our planning.

Look at the parable Jesus tells immediately after giving this challenging teaching (in v.27 to 33).  What kind of “tower” are we building?  Is your life, is mine, like building a ‘tower’?  As we build, using the material Jesus and his father supplies, we get to see the meaning of life from the divine perspective with greater and greater clarity?  We must each ask ourselves today – how is my building going?  What sort of view am I now getting of life?

Daily Readings & Thought for March 21st. "THE LORD IS NEAR TO ALL WHO ... "

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers 2), (Psalm 145-147), (Luke 12)

All three Psalms (145-147) and our chapter in Luke (12) today were greatly thought provoking; a great number of verses were very challenging – personally – to read.  Some people are sceptical of the statement, “the LORD is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works” [Psa.145 v.17] cynically saying that if there is such a God who is all powerful, he should stop bad things from happening, especially to good people.

The verses which follow help us to correct our thinking from such ‘tunnel vision.’  They tell us, “The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.  He fulfils the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.  The LORD preserves all who love him …” [v.18-20] Look at the lives of those who really served God such as Paul, how true are these words of his life after he was converted.

Some only call on God when circumstances in their life are getting desperate; but they have no ‘rock’ established in their minds as a firm foundation for an unshakeable belief in God.  They have not been calling “upon him in truth”?   How many do?  The next Psalm (146) tells us, “put not your trust in princes, in … man in whom there is no salvation.  When his breath departs he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans (thoughts) perish” [v.3,4] Yet how many are trying to find “princes,” leaders, they hope they can have confidence in!  They soon lose confidence in the leaders they elect.

Only those who genuinely love God and show that love in how they live their lives have a future beyond the grave.  In Luke we saw how Jesus told his disciples “do not be anxious about your life … what you will eat …nor be worried … instead seek his kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.” [v.22,29,31] They will be wonderfully “added” when his kingdom comes.  Finally, we noticed a special verse in the 147th Psalm, “the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.” [v.11]  May we all live so that our Lord takes pleasure

Daily Readings & Thought for March 20th. “BLESSED RATHER ARE THOSE WHO …”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today's readings.. (Numbers 1), (Psalm 143, 144), (Luke 11)

We have a particularly challenging chapter in Luke’s gospel today.  It is full of challenges by Jesus – contrasting normal human attitudes with what their attitude and aims and actions in life should be – IF they are truly following divine principles.  We read “ … a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, ‘Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!’  But he said, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.’” [11 v.27,28]  . Today we can say, “Blessed rather are those who read the word of God and make what they read part of their thinking and doing.

In v. 24-26 there is a short parable about an “unclean spirit” – we can interpret that today as a dirty state of mind.  Jesus said, “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order.  Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself and they enter and dwell there.  And the last state (of mind) of that person is worse than the first.”

We see this as teaching the lesson that when you get rid of a bad attitude of mind, distorted ways of thinking and therefore of acting – it is vital to replace them with good ways of thinking and therefore of doing.  For us, daily feeding on God’s word and living by God’s principles are essential – for “blessed rather are those who” read the words God caused to be written and preserved and “keep” them.

Then we can make the words of David’s Psalm 143 we read today our own, “Hear my prayer O LORD… In your faithfulness answer me … Enter not into judgment with your servant for no one living is righteous before you … I meditate on all you have done … my soul thirsts for you like a parched land (thirsts for water).  Answer me quickly. O LORD!  … Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust.  Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.”   May we lift up our hearts and minds in this way.
