Daily Readings & Thought for February 16th. "THE REASON YOU ARE WRONG"
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The religious leaders tried hard to discredit Jesus but the harder they tried, the more he confronted them and showed them how foolish their thinking and attitudes were. The Sadducees who were the most ‘worldly’ of them, refusing to believe there would be a resurrection were told, "Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?" [Mark 12 v.24]
The same can be said today of nearly everyone - but we ourselves must not be 'puffed up' because of the way our careful reading of God's word has led us to increasingly comprehend the 'big picture' of the meaning of life and the spirit of genuine love for God that must be part of this. Let us be like the scribe who, with genuine heart, agreed with Jesus saying, "You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." [v.32,33]
Let us not only understand this - but believe and practice this with all our heart. May Jesus ‘say’ to uswhen we are in ‘deep’ prayer, as he said to the scribe, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." [v.34] And how did the scribe come to give such a good answer? Surely he had God's word is his heart!
Let us recall what we read in the Psalms recently, words which he would have known and probably memorised, "Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. .... The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!" [50 v.14,15,23]
Do we feel as thankful as we should for the wondrous blessing of being spiritual children of God - in this godless world? Let us make sure that we do - and then - how soon will we see and experience - for ever - "the salvation of God."

The Ways of Providence: (Audio Book) by Robert Roberts
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="zoomIn"]SOME time ago, a newspaper account of an accident spoke of the escape of a certain person as "providential." A reader wrote to the paper objecting to this mode of describing a natural occurrence. Another replied in defence of the reporter's phraseology, whereupon there sprang up quite a breezy controversy on the nature of providence, or whether there was such a thing at all.
The following chapters may be regarded as a contribution to this controversy, without, however, taking part in the particular fight occasioned. It is a contribution standing apart from the dispute of the combatants. It stands upon grounds totally different from those on which they argued the case. It recognizes the operation of the fixed laws of nature as evident to universal experience, and demonstrated by the experiments of science. But at the same time it accepts the higher form of truth presented to us in the Hebrew scriptures— prophetic and apostolic.

It proceeds on the assumption that the Bible is divine—an assumption which the author does not accept without the conviction of its demonstrability from a variety of sources. Looking at the Bible as divine, the author is concerned to know and exhibit the Bible doctrine of providence only, believing that outside the Bible channel, we can gather no reliable notions of providence whatever, but lose ourselves in the mist of speculation and uncertainty. Inside the Bible channel, we get definite notions—clear light and valuable guidance on all matters affecting human life as at present troublously exhibited on earth, whether as regards individual well-being or national development.
In the illustration of these, the author devotes himself to a work which is entirely out of harmony with the modern intellectual temper, and unsuited to the popular taste, but which, nevertheless, he believes to be a truly useful work that will be appreciated whenever and wherever the Bible comes to be estimated at its true worth, as the embodiment of the ideas and works of God among men.

We review what the Bible says about earthquakes in the latter days as major earthquakes rock the Middle East.
On Monday two massive earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Turkish territory just north of Syria. Magnitude 7 earthquakes are considered ‘major’. Since then hundreds of additional aftershocks have been felt of a magnitude 4 and greater. According to the New York Times, this is one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded.
Buildings and walls fell down and tragically, at the time of writing, it is being reported that over 23,000 people have lost their lives. Cemeteries in the region are said to be unable to keep up with the demand for space.
In Syria particularly the situation has been terrible as widespread aerial bombardments undertaken in the civil war already meant structures were weak.
The impact of the earthquakes are effecting millions of people as survivors struggle to find shelter and rescuers are becoming increasingly desperate as they seek people who may be alive buried in the rubble.
South of the epicentre of the major earthquake lies Israel and tremors have been felt measuring nearly 4 on the Richter scale. These have prompted the Israel Defence Force Home Front to issue instructions to citizens on what to do if a earthquake hits.
Although relations are frosty to say the least between Israel and their suffering neighbours the Times of Israel reported that Israel has sent aid to both Syria and Turkey. Israel are calling it “Operation Olive Branch” as they seek to build relationships. The Jerusalem Post ran a report on February 10th entitled “Operation Olive Branch: Nine-year-old rescued by Israeli delegation personnel”. Apparently “The boy was trapped under the rubble for about 120 hours”.
Every wall shall fall to the ground
So why is this interesting to students of Bible prophecy? The answer is that the Bible prophecies immense seismic activity during the time when the Lord Jesus Christ reveals himself to the nations of this earth. The “latter day” prophecy of Ezekiel 38 speaks of the return of the Jews to their land and an invasion of them by a Russian confederacy of nations who attack Israel under the leadership of a mysterious character called “Gog”. The Jews have indeed returned to their land after 2000 years of dispersion as the prophecy has said. They’ve been doing this since their state was declared in 1948 as required by the Biblical text. We are witnessing the rise of an aggressive Russia and the international community is at odds with Israel so we can see this prophecy coming to pass before our very eyes building to the events foretold by God’s prophet thousands of years ago. The prophecy speaks of the invaders coming to their end being destroyed by the power of God and the outcome is that all nations will know God (Ezekiel 38:23). At verses 18 and 19 in that chapter we read of how God will bring about the destruction of the armies of Gog: “And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face. For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.” This is a description of a massive earthquake such that the land has not seen before.There shall be a very great valley
Another latter day prophecy of the same time can be seen in Zechariah 14. Again in that chapter we read of Israel being invaded by “all nations” (v2). We read of one who bares the name of God and embodies God’s awesome power who will come and stand on the mount of Olives to the East of Jerusalem. When this happens we read this: “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” Again this illustrates massive seismic events. from verses 10-11 we read of a huge plan being opened up where it had not been before and the area of Jerusalem being “lifted up”.Exalted above the hills
In Isaiah we also have an illusion to this in the latter day prophecy of chapter 2 which states: “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.” (Isaiah 2:2). So then. The Bible is very clear that in the area of Israel huge typographic change will happen.Israel Is Hundreds of Years Overdue for a Massive Earthquake
Its interesting to note that a tectonic plate fault-line runs right under the mount of Olives. Experts expect an earthquake to occur in the land of Israel in the near future. News outlet Haaretz reported on this back in 2019 when they ran an article entitled “Israel Is Hundreds of Years Overdue for a Massive Earthquake”. The article sates: “Israeli geologists are uneasy about the entirety of the Dead Sea Rift. They are uneasy about Israel’s north, where towns have been shaken to bits throughout history, but are even more worried about the south, including the Red Sea resort of Eilat…. “In general, we’re worried about the whole Dead Sea Transform (the Syrian-African great rift) from Eilat to Lebanon,” qualifies Dr. Yariv Hamiel, head of the GSI’s Geological Hazards and Geological Engineering Division. “There could be a strong quake anywhere along it at any time,” he adds.” Haaretz ran another news article this week (Feb 6th) after the earthquakes in Turkey entitled “Massive Quake in Israel ‘Only a Matter of Time,’ Experts Warn”. The huge earthquakes we are seeing in the news from this region are indeed a sure sign of the times that the way has been prepared for the latter day prophecies to be fulfilled.The return of Jesus Christ
But who is this one who carries such power that when his feet touch the Mount of Olives it will split in two, creating a great shaking so that no wall will stand? The Bible also provides this answer when it tells us about the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the book of Acts and chapter 1 we read that after his resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days with his disciples. We then read in verse 9: “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” So these men in white told his followers that he would return in the same way as he went up into heaven. He will return in a bodily form in the future. But where was he when he ascended into the cloud? The answer is in verse 12 which reads : “Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet”. Jesus is the one who will wield the power of God upon his return and manifestation to the nations. He will cause the destruction of Gog and save Gods people, the Jews. He will establish Gods kingdom on the earth from Jerusalem which was the place of the throne of King David of old, his father. He will be king of the Jews and of all nations. He, as God’s representative, will rule the world in peace and righteousness. As it says in Zechariah 14 verse 9 “And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.” This is the message of the Bible. The question for us all is, will we be there to help him in filling the earth with God’s glory? “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” Habbukuk 2:14 So we watch the signs of the times in full confidence of our faith in the hope of the Bible praying for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was just under a year ago, on February 24 that Russia invaded Ukraine. The war has not gone in a way that many had expected. Russia moved in quickly, it seemed like Ukraine would fall and the war would be over in short order. This however did not happen. From a Bible prophecy stand point we understand that the angels are at work and they will bring a situation out of this war, beyond what we may have anticipated. Almost a year in, we ask the question, is Russia losing the war? More importantly from a Bible prophetic view, we may ask, “Why is the war dragging on?”
Before we consider these two questions, we will briefly review a few points regarding Russia and Bible prophecy.
From the prophets, we understand that at the time of the end Russia will be a great power. As has been considered many times on Bible in the News, in Ezekiel 38, the latter day invasion of Israel is led by Russia. The Roman Empire, the eternal enemy and the power which destroyed the Jewish nation in AD 70, is represented in the image of the kingdom’s of men, in Daniel 2, as the two iron legs. There are two iron legs because the Roman empire divided into two parts, an eastern, Greek leg based in Constantinople and a western, Latin leg based in Rome. Russia traces its political ancestry from the Eastern Roman, or Byzantium Empire. Historically when Constantinople fell to the Turks, the new capital became Moscow. In Daniel 11, which focuses on the Greek side of the Roman Empire — the king of the north, again is the one who plants himself in the holy mountain, at the time of the end. From Daniel 2 we also understand that the great image of the kingdom of men will stand complete in the last days, before the Lord Jesus Christ leads its destruction, as the little stone power. The great image is destroyed together and so therefore it must stand together. (Daniel 2:35,44) This necessitates the coming together again of the Eastern and Western legs, which today would include the European Union and Russia.
It may not seem like it today, but the goal of the Roman Catholic Church and the European Union, has been to unite Europe from the “Atlantic to the Urals”. To unite Russia and Europe. While it may not seem like it, the war taking place in Ukraine, is the result of NATO pushing eastward. One could say, in an effort to unite Europe. This however, would make Russia a part of NATO and really dominated by the European Union. Russia pushed back. What is really happening in Ukraine, is a war to determine who will dominate a united Europe.
In the “Erasmus” religion and public policy section of the Economist, on March 20, 2013, there was an interesting piece entitled, "One lung or two”. It was written on the background of a historically significant meeting at the time, between the newly enthroned Roman pope Francis and the head of the Greek Orthodox Church on March 20th, 2013.
The article began:
"CHRISTENDOM has two lungs, eastern and western, and to be really healthy it must learn to breathe with both of them. That metaphor was first used by Russian religious philosophers of the late Tsarist era: thinkers like Vladimir Solovyov, who was fascinated by Catholicism and felt that eastern Christians could learn from the Western church's relatively active presence in the world. The image was taken up again by Pope John Paul II. ...
"On the face of things, the Christian world has moved a bit closer, over the past 24 hours, to acquiring a fully operative respiratory system. Bartholomew I, the Patriarch of Constantinople and therefore "first among equals" in the Orthodox hierarchy, attended yesterday's inaugural mass for the new pontiff. The Istanbul-based cleric pointed out that he was the first Orthodox Patriarch to be present at such an event since the formal east-west split of 1054, when his predecessor was rudely excommunicated by a papal legate. Today the new pope received Patriarch Bartholomew and they exchanged warm words about the need to work for full reconciliation.”
So there is an effort to unite Europe, both religiously and politically. Currently there is a war, which may determine who will dominate Europe militarily and potentially also politically.
Now, let’s consider whether Russia is losing the war.
Reading any of the mainstream western media, one gets the impression that Russia is losing the war, in fact, that the country is on the brink of collapse. An example of this is a short article on Newsweek, today. The headline is: "Russian Death Toll Soars Past 130,000 as War Nears 1-Year Mark: Ukraine”. The second paragraph says,
"The war will hit its one-year mark on February 24, and the amount of Russian losses keep mounting at a rapid rate. The Ukraine Defense Ministry stated Saturday that 720 Russian soldiers died the previous day, bringing the total to 130,590 dead Russian soldiers on the war's 346th day.”
Well from this, you would definitely understand that Russia is being defeated. However, this also highlights a major problem with western reporting. The figures are coming directly from the "Ukraine Defense Ministry”. It is easy to see the problem with this. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry, for many reasons, will obviously try and create the impression that they are winning the war, whether to convince their own soldiers and civilians that the war is worth fighting, to convincing western governments that victory is an achievable goal.
It seems like the western mainstream media, has simply been the mouth piece for the Ukrainian government. What is exactly happening is difficult to ascertain. Of course the Russian news sources, report a very different story, however, it has hard to find these reports, as the Russian media has largely been banned in the west. I have followed some of these new sources on the Telegram app. For example, in stark contrast to what the western media is reporting, the last couple of days, the Russian media has reported, that: the settlement of Belogorovka, has been liberated from Ukrainian forces; that Russian forces struck two Ukrainian army brigades in the Zaporozhye area, and; that Russian forces struck over 70 Ukrainian artillery units at firing positions, etc., etc.
Russia has a tremendous manufacturing capability, without relying on others. The Russian forces can fire 20,000 shells a day with no worries of running out. The west simply does not have that manufacturing capability and are beginning to run low on supplies.
The conservative news site, the Gateway Pundit, has had a number of pieces analyzing the situation, by Larry Johnson. Most of them concluding that Russia is winning and it is the Ukrainian side that is suffering heavy losses. Here are some examples:

Meanwhile, the western sanctions simply have not worked as a way to defeat Russia and have probably done more damage to the western economies.
So despite what we read in the mainstream media, Russia is in fact not losing the war and in fact may be doing quite well. It is difficult to tell what is happening on the ground, as neither side is most likely telling the truth.
Why then is the war dragging on?
At this point it is difficult to answer this question and time will make the picture clearer. However, two important results are being seen as a result of the protracted war.
1. As I considered on Bible in the News early last year, the protracted war has spurred many Jews to leave Ukraine and Russia and make Aliyah to their homeland Israel. If Russia had simply walked into Kiev and took over Ukraine in a virtually bloodless coup, it is quite likely that the Jews left in Ukraine and Russia would not have had the same impetus to flee from the land of the north.
The Jerusalem Post reported on December 22, 2022, that: "Israel receives 70,000 new immigrants in 2022, highest rate in decades. An analysis of Aliyah trends in 2022 reveals that most olim this year came from Russia and Ukraine.”
This is an exciting and wonderful fulfillment of prophecy, witnessing the hand of the Almighty, continuing to bring His people back at the time of the end!
2. The second effect, of the war being dragged on, is that the west is getting more and more dragged into the war. Economically and militarily. Their economies are being weakened. Their supplies of armaments are being run down. The west itself is getting into a precarious situation. Again, if Russia had simply taken Ukraine in short order, this would not have happened. Time will tell the long term effects of this and it could be momentous.
As those many Jews found in Ukraine and Russia, it was suddenly time for them to go. For believers in the last days, it will be the same. Let us remember the blessing of Revelation 16:15.
"Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

On Tuesday this week, Isla Bryson, a transgender woman who raped two women was convicted and awaits sentencing next month. Isla Bryson first appeared in a scottish court in 2019 whilst known as Adam Graham. However, in the following year, Bryson told Jurors that he had made the decision to begin transition from a man to a woman
Since 2014, the Scottish Prison Service’s policy has been that prisoners should be accommodated on the basis of self-declared identity, subject to a risk assessment. The accommodation must best suit “the person’s needs and should reflect the gender in which they are currently living.” Up until the point of conviction, Isla Bryson was held on remand at a women’s prison, segregated from the other inmates.The community safety spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives, Russel Finlay commented that “It would be wrong to put a male-bodied rapist in a women's prison.”
On Thursday this week, Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish First Minister confirmed that Bryson would in fact be removed from the Woman’s prison and would not serve the sentence there. In fact, Bryson is expected to be moved to a male wing of a prison this week.
The Gender Reform Bill
Over the past weeks, this has been a subject of heated debate, with concerns being raised about the safety of other women in the prison being incarcerated with a male rapist. This tension was further exacerbated as the Scottish Parliament passed legislation last month aimed at making it easier for people to change their legally-recognised sex. This gender recognition Reform bill has been blocked by the UK Government over its potential impact on equalities laws that apply across Scotland, England and Wales. The Scottish conservative leader, Douglas Ross said his party had "warned for months" during the debate over the gender reforms that "violent criminals just like the sex offender, the absolute beast we are discussing today, would try to exploit loopholes in the law and attack and traumatise women.” He added: "It should not have taken public disgust and a slew of negative headlines about a double rapist being sent to a women's prison for Nicola Sturgeon to realise this was completely unacceptable and wrong. "She and her justice secretary have the power to impose a blanket ban on all rapists being sent to women's prisons, so why is she refusing to exercise it? "It suggests Nicola Sturgeon's screeching U-turn in the Bryson case was down to fears over the political risk to herself rather than the safety risk to women prisoners." Isla Bryson’s case is a further example that the extreme gender ideology currently being pushed across the western world today is unsustainable in real life. It is far easier to become a mouth piece for this ideology than it is to enforce it when it comes to things like prison policies, or sporting competition rules, since it is enforcing a pseudo-reality that doesn’t fit with everyday life.Bible Teaching about Gender
Whilst this is a negative subject, it can also be seen as a sign of the times, showing that we are living in the last days of the Kingdom of men. And whilst clearly, the apostles and prophets didn’t live in times when gender was as malleable as people claim today, nevertheless, the Bible does provide guidance on these issues. The book of Genesis tells us that “in the beginning, God created…”, and that everything he had made was “very good” (Gen 1:1,31). These statements have far reaching consequences. This very obvious bible teaching shows that God is sovereign, not man. God is the designer and knows what he intended for mankind and his creation, according to his wisdom. Men and woman were made to be different from the rest of the animal creation because they were made in the “image and likeness of God”. They can reflect moral values in the way that the rest of creation cannot. God chose to make us “male and female”. Men and women are different, but complementary, combining to achieve the aim God had in view. Similarly, Jesus affirms the teaching of Genesis in Matthew 19:4-6: "And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” This teaching sets out several things:- We are created beings, made by God.
- Male and female is part of God’s creative design
- The capacity to be “one flesh” (a biological function) is intrinsic to being male or female
- Mankind must not seek to alter God’s arrangement.
