Thoughts on the readings for March 7th (Leviticus 14, Psalm 115, 116, 2 Corinthians 8, 9)

Leviticus 14 details the cleansing of the leper. Only God can cleanse us from sin and our Father does so through the work accomplished in the offering of His Son. Verses 1-9 speak of ceremonies outside the camp. (The termination of the ceremonial death of the leper). Verses 1-3 tell of the priestly inspection. Verses 4-7 tell about the offering of the birds. There were no graduations of offerings as we are all equally poor when it comes to our incapacity to solve our problem before the Almighty. Verses 8-9 describe the first cleansing, by isolating outside the camp for seven days. Verses 10-20 speak of ceremonies within the camp. (Reinstatement of the cleansed leper to the camp of Israel as a member of the priestly people and to worship before Yahweh). Verses 14-18 establish that the cleansed leper's restoration is achieved through a ceremony which is parallel to that of the putting of the priests into their office of service to the LORD. This shows that the restored leper is in no way inferior to anyone of God's chosen people. (Galatians 6:1-5). Verses 10-14 tell of the "guilt", or "trespass", offering. Verses 15-18 describe the anointing of the leper. Verse 19 speaks of the Sun Offering; and verse 20 of the Burnt Offering. Verses 21-22 tell of the offerings of poverty. Verses 33-54 describe the inspection of and cleansing of the House (of Israel cp. Matthew 23:38-39). Psalm 115 is a psalm calling on the worshippers to acknowledge the greatness of the LORD and to give glory to His great name. Verse 1 tells of our Sovereign's loving kindness and His faithfulness. Verses 2-8 speaks about the futility of idol worship. It states in verse 8, "Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them" (ESV). Verses 9-11 exhorts the hearers to trust in Yahweh. Verses 12-13 describe the benefits that flow to those who have placed their trust in the Almighty. Verses 14-15 is a prayer to our Sovereign to bless the faithful. Verse 16 outlines the reward of the righteous is in this earth, not in heaven. Verse 17 proves that mankind has no conscious existence in death. All the righteous will praise their magnificent Omnipotent Creator. In Psalm 116 the writer declares his love of the LORD. And verses 1-2 tell of why the psalmist praised his Creator. Verses 3-4 tell of the extremity which came upon the psalmist. The writer's prayer for deliverance is recorded in verses 5-7; and of his thanksgiving upon his rescue. Verse 10 is an expression of Messiah's confidence in his God. It is quoted by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:13-15 to show the same confidence in God is generated in the LORD's trusting followers. Verse 12 describes Jesus's dismay at the faithlessness of his Apostles - especially Judas Iscariot. Verses 13-19 tell of how Messiah will praise his God after being raised from the dead. The Lord Jesus Christ will forevermore extol the grace and love of His Father to his faithful immortalised followers. Verse 15 describes the Lord's Father's pain at the death of His Son. Verse 16 tells of Jesus' offering being effective since through his mother Mary he was "the Son of Man". Verses 17-19 speaks of the glorious house of praise which will be built for the praise and worship of the God of the whole earth. In 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 Paul encourages extreme generosity in giving support to the poor believers of Jerusalem. He says that generosity is of our Heavenly Father, who provides unstintingly for all of His children. Consider this, all we have is God's anyway; and not our own. When we give it is only what He has first given us. And if we feel we cannot give then think again. Our Heavenly Father is always able to recompense faithful service. But our greatest reason for giving is out of our gratefulness to Him for what He has given us in His Son. Chapter 9:15 ESV read aloud- "Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!" Pause and Ponder.
