Slavery in the Bible (Old & New Testaments) 2 Studies

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]One of the big issues brought up by sceptics who wish to criticize the Bible is that of Slavery. The way that the sceptics treat the Bible is usually unfair; the method is to assume that the Slavery of the Old Testament was the same as the slavery of the worst parts of the 18th and 19th centuries and then to condemn the Bible as supporting this kind of slavery. The reality is that the bond-service of the Old Testament is significantly different from the slavery of more modern and more secular times. This video looks at the various different kinds of bond-service which are found in the Old Testament and shows how they worked. many of them were systems for supporting the poor rather than methods of oppression. Some were completely forbidden. In every variety of permitted slavery the Old Testament law attempts to make conditions for the bond-servant or slave better than they were before the start of service. Those in bonded service had considerable rights, including the right to move to a different master. There are certainly significant differences between these and more modern secular slavery. One question that is often asked is why the Old Testament didn't abolish slavery entirely. This is answered in part by the fact that many of the permitted varieties of bond-service were there to support someone who had fallen on hard times, and as such were a benefit to the bond-servant. There is also the point that slavery of some kind was rife all over the world at the time, that the Bible realises that it cannot be eliminated and so regulates it to prevent the worst excesses of servitude. There is a companion video to this one which looks at slavery in the New Testament. This is at: https://studio.youtube.com/video/c5rh...
