A @Christadelphians Video: n the King James translation of the Bible (Authorised Version) this passage refers to the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost, with the comment “These three are one”. This is close to being a statement of the doctrine of the Trinity. However, this verse does not appear in more recent translations. The reason for this is that the verse overwhelmingly does not appear in early manuscripts of the Bible; not only that, but it shows signs of having been translated from Latin. The evidence shows that the passage was added to the Greek text of the Bible in the sixteenth century, long after the New Testament was written. It is worth thinking why this verse was added to the New Testament. The reason is that there is no other verse anywhere in the Bible which even gives a hint of the Doctrine of the Trinity. The theologians of the sixteenth century felt that they needed to put this verse into the New Testament to teach something that they believed, but which was absent from Scripture. This video is produced by the Gospel Online project which is arranged and supported by the Christadelphian community in the United Kingdom.
# Summary This presentation provides a detailed examination of the passage in 1 John 5:7 that is often cited by Trinitarians as evidence for the doctrine of the Trinity. The presenter argues that this passage, known as the "Comma Johanneum," is a late addition to the text and was not part of the original biblical manuscript.
Highlights
🔍 The "Comma Johanneum" is a passage in the King James Version of the Bible that states, "there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." However, this passage is not found in modern Bible translations, as it is considered a later addition.
🔍 The presenter traces the history of the "Comma Johanneum," showing that it was not present in the earliest Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, nor was it quoted by the early Church Fathers who were developing the doctrine of the Trinity. The passage first appears in a Latin manuscript from the 4th or 5th century, and gradually made its way into the Latin Vulgate and later Greek editions of the New Testament.
🔍 The presenter argues that the "Comma Johanneum" was deliberately inserted into the text by scribes who wanted to provide scriptural support for the doctrine of the Trinity, which is not explicitly stated elsewhere in the Bible. This practice of altering the text to fit a particular theological agenda is known as an "Orthodox Corruption." # Keywords - Biblical Textual Criticism - Trinitarian Doctrine - Orthodox Corruptions
